Is this right? It’s the match on Monday cancelling lessons from 1pm so the students can watch the Iran vs England game

I couldn’t give a flying fuck about the football

It matters a lot to those it does though and I think these kind of cultural experiences make school better and make kids feel heard, understood and like they’re not missing out by being at school!

I would hope they wouldn’t let it pass without discussing the topics that should arise. They will have heard stuff around anyway so it’s a great opportunity to help them get their facts straight

HotDogJumpingFrogHaveACookie · 14/11/2022 20:26

It's 1 match. Liklihood is that attendance would be low otherwise.

Conkersareback · 14/11/2022 20:27

RampantIvy · 14/11/2022 20:25

A football match is 90 minutes, with 15 half time, it's not a whole afternoon.

It was a "whole afternoon" at DD's secondary school. They had four periods of one hour before lunch and one after lunch. So it would have meant a whole afternoon off.

Okay..... but it's still the same amount of actual time, wether it's a whole afternoon, morning, part and part.

The school day is 6 hours? It's 105 minutes of those, let's say 120 for time added on, so two hours.

It doesn't really matter, but so please be pedantic.

MsFogi · 14/11/2022 20:27

If this is a mixed/girls' school I hope they do the same for equivalent women's matches.
Either way it is ridiculous - not everyone follows or is interested in football and we don't cancel school for other niche interests. Also, many people are boycotting the WC because of the horror that is Quatar

Womencanlift · 14/11/2022 20:28

Would be ridiculous for any World Cup but this one in particular it is a shocking use of educational time

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 14/11/2022 20:30

It's 1 lesson, I couldn't get worked up about it

AnApparitionQuipped · 14/11/2022 20:31

I think it's ridiculous. People who wanted to watch a less popular sport tournament would be fined if they took an afternoon off school. No problem with people watching football if they want, but it shouldn't be assumed everyone is interested.

They play one game during school hours, I don't think this means they'll fail their exams!

For exam classes it send out the message as to what is the priority. Not all students are football fans - so lessons cancelled for this match , why not miss a lesson at another time as it shows that lessons are not always the priority. Its the modelling of behaviour

Don't worry. It will only be 3 matches.

Ouch! 😂
England’s group seems super easy though ( as always) so they’ll see I tell advance to the next stage(s)!

maddiemookins16mum · 14/11/2022 20:44

We’re having pizza and drinks at work - we can start early/finish later to make up the 90 mins 😊😊😊

Drama! Don't be so ridiculous.

I like that!

DeanStockwooooo · 14/11/2022 20:46

I remember thus been done when I was at primary school, I can't recall the team that England played against ( possibly Argentina ) I wasn't interested in the foot ball but watched it anyway , the following day we had a maths class and the teacher used the match to help illustrate different maths puzzles how to work out percentages by asking what percentage did each team have of yellow / red cards , when the first goal/ foul/ corner was taken what % of time had past
Then in geography we learnt where the country was, how many people lived there etc .
It made the lessons much more engaging.

I think given the controversy about Qatar hosting in the first place they ought to boycott the whole thing and spend some time educating children on the appalling human rights record of Qatar, the number of immigrants killed building the stadia, the abuse of LGBTQ people in and visiting the country and the hypocrisy of people like Beckham, Neville etc etc who happily tout their inclusive liberal beliefs at home, but then take millions from the Qataris to present for them. Shameful.

Yep!! This!

Our school did this for one of the world cups or Euros and it was brilliant. 20/25 odd years later and it's one of my favourite memories of school. Hundreds of us in the sports hall all together watching, coming together and cheering on our national team. It's was great.
Not all learning needs to include a textbook.

I came to say this, still remember it fondly 18-20 years later and I’m not a football fan. It stopped children bunking off too and led to a great atmosphere in the school.

The whole thing should be boycotted

Quatar! Really.... why are we supporting this?

SudocremOnEverything · 14/11/2022 20:51

I suspect DS2’s school will have scheduled tests or something instead. 🤣

I cannot imagine them stopping lessons to watch the football.

generalh · 14/11/2022 20:51

We are doing this for the Wales V Iran game. It is at 10am and if we don't show the game our attendance will probably be right down. Lessons will take place before and after the game. It is the lesser of 2 evils.
Not ideal, but it is better for those, who would stay home all day, to miss one lesson and be in the rest of the day than to be off all day.

ShakeYourFeathers · 14/11/2022 20:51

I remember this happening at my school. Which was very unlike them, but the head was football mad so think that made a difference.

It was the World Cup in Japan so because of the time difference it was during school time .

As pp said it's one match which is in school hours. I can see where the op is coming from but on balance yabu.

Rather a lot of controversy about Iran at the moment too.

Natsku · 14/11/2022 20:58

DD's class spent a lot of time missing lessons to watch the last winter olympics (her class teacher is a PE teacher so maybe that's why, he was very interested in it!). So long as they don't fall behind because of it then don't see the issue.

Oysterbabe · 14/11/2022 20:59

I hope my children's school do this too 😊

Jb2182 · 14/11/2022 21:01

I was at secondary school during the 2002 World Cup in Japan when matches started at 9/10 am our time. My headmaster said we can come into school after the matches or if we had to get to school on time because of parents work /transport, they set up TV sets in the gym. I guess by letting the students watch, it saves a few people saying they're ill and bunking off!
