To be angry at Milkshake's Big School programme?

How dare Channel 5 give pre-schoolers the idea that starting big school is about a brightly coloured well resourced, spacious new classroom full of well behaved children and an abundance of teaching assistants and lots of outside space packed with playground equipment, when the reality is they will go to an under-resourced cramped shabby Victorian clarroom full of shouty, lively kids, tatty toys and books and a bit of concrete playspace with not much in it. Or is that just the schools round here??

I really like it.

I love the music

posieflump · 30/01/2008 11:58

wouldn't make much of a programme would it if it was how it really is

pooka · 30/01/2008 11:59

The school on Big School looks very similar to dd's new school. I like it, and used to watch it with dd before she started school to give her an idea of what it might be like (i.e. at least at reception, very similar to her pre-school).

hunkermunker · 30/01/2008 12:00

DS1 loves it, but his school is fairly like the one in the prog.

I do think the blokeish TA (teacher? I'm usually dozing when it's on) is a bit shouty though.

spokette · 30/01/2008 12:04

I have not seen the programme but the four schools I looked around were like that. I was very impressed with all of them tbh.

hunkermunker · 30/01/2008 12:14

I think, actually, instead of complaining that other children are being told that school should be like this, you'd be better trying to change your local schools.

Apologies if you are already active in this area.

princessosyth · 30/01/2008 12:16

Agree with hunker, it is fairly typical of most schools I have visited.

anniebear · 30/01/2008 12:18

my 2 6 year olds love it, glued each morning

I think its really good, although the Teacher annoys me!!!!

VictorianSqualor · 30/01/2008 12:23

Never seen it but I know of the two schools DD has ben to, the two nurseries and the schools my friends DC's have been to that they are normally brightly coloured with relatively well-behaved children.
At least in the early years anyway.

Oh crikey - are you inner city with lovely primary schools? I thought our local school was OK until I read your replies to my post .. guess its all a postcode lottery!!

mines like yours mugglewump. Not sure I sure how onecould personally change it. Knock down the school and surrounding houses? Wee bit expensive for the pta I think. The council are doing that with some schools that are falling down (and have big playgrounds to build new schools on) but thats the 50's badly built ones. the victorian ones are pretty solid.

VictorianSqualor · 30/01/2008 17:32

The school DD is at now is only ten years old but ehr nursery was the church building and my bf's daughters school was one that still has girls and boys written over seperate doors, it doesnt take much to paint the walls and put up some displays.

Maybe organise something with the PTA if you feel the school isnt as well-resourced/decorated as you'd like?

bubblerock · 30/01/2008 17:38

DS's school was like that (inner town, very old) but they've been moved to the Salvation army for 18 months whilst they knock it down and build a brand spanking new one.

hotcrossbunny · 30/01/2008 17:40

My dd hates it. Says its too noisy and the children are naughty and the teacher too shouty... She loves her own school though.

sparklylucy · 30/01/2008 17:45

I have mixed views, I watch it because my godson stars in it but personally find the teacher a bit annoying ( but apparently she has an excellent reputation). My DD1 age 5 says ' they dont do much work, do they?'

princessosyth · 31/01/2008 10:11

Where is it sparklylucy?

Mercy · 31/01/2008 10:15

My dc love it, the music too!

And they go to an under-resourced Victorian school (admittedly it's not cramped or shabby)

Ledodgy · 31/01/2008 10:19

I didn't watch the program but it sounds like dd's school see here and it's a state school in south Liverpool.

Thank you hatrick for restoring my faith in run of the mill inclusive inner city schools.
