Finally rang doctors

After yet another weekend of anxiety, panic attacks over things as simple as going to the shops and a constant knot in my chest I have rung the doctors this morning to discuss some sort of anxiety treatment. I took citalopram in the past and it didn't work brilliantly for me. I'm hoping they will let me have something like propranolol which I can take as and when my anxiety flares up - it tends to be ok when I'm just at home or in safe spaces, it's when I have to do something out of the ordinary that it's bad.

I'm not sure if I can specifically request this though? I have a nurse ringing me back later this morning so not sure how far I'll get. But at least I've taken the first step I guess.

I'm so glad you have taken the first step.
I was on Propranolol for a couple of years , I'm sure you can request that they cons6if this would be the best treatment for you.
Best wishes.

@Onefootinthegroove how did you find it? I don't want to sound pushy, like I am telling them their job. But ideally I don't want to be on a daily medication like citalopram again as it affected my whole mood, libido, concentration etc. I would much prefer something I could take when an anxiety inducing situation was on the cards that would stop the physical symptoms. It's fear of the panic symptoms happening that seems to bring on a panic sometimes.

@ElleDriver I found them really helpful. They did stop the anxiety from spiraling plus knowing that I had them I'd I needed them also helped.

Propranolol was like actual magic for me. Good luck.

Do they just put a stop to the physical symptoms? Is it something you take on an as and when needed basis? This is what I would prefer I think.

I haven't managed to get anything today but I have a referral to a mental health specialist in a weeks time. A week feels like a long time at the moment but at least I'm in the system.

@ElleDriver yes, for me they stopped the physical symptoms and also the racing mind. Made everything clearer.

Onefootinthegroove · 14/11/2022 11:26

Oh, sorry and yes, I had them to take as needed.
As an aside if you suffer from migraines, as I do, they also reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks.

I'd encourage you to talk about the symptoms first off, rather than going straight to asking for a particular medication. Make sure that your symptoms are textbook for prescribing the drug you want.

If they suggest anything else, or ask you if you have any ideas, is the time to ask the Dr whether he would suggest <the one you want>. Then if they don't recommend it, you will at least know why.

I took a constant low dose, but yes stopped the physical symptoms, i was going light headed as it i was going to faint. Some days it was happening maybe ten times an hour, it lasted 4 or 5 seconds.
