to want to set my sofa on fire?

because I cannot get the smell of dog pee out of it?

bonfire night we had drugged poor old DDog but at 12.30pm someone very kindly let off a nice bunch of very loud fireworks, she was sleeping on me as I was sleeping downstairs with her and she must have got a huge fright and peed herself. At first I didn’t realise so it went through the cushions. So far I have used:
antibac spray
biological washing powder
sodium bicarbonate
specialist cleaning stuff from Pets at Hone with Enzymes in it that are supposed to destroy urine

and I can still smell it, it’s revolting I feel my whole living room smells of pee. DH said last night he can still smell it so I said to him I’m going to take the sofa outside and set fire to it that will get rid of the smell. It’s about 18 months old and I can’t really afford a new one (I’ve never been 100% keen on the colour either) and I sat on one of vision with a bust biro in my pocket and got ink on it too. I think it’s cursed 🤣

Can you wash the cushion covers and try and soaking the foam pads in wash power/liquid for a while?

Johnnysgirl · 13/11/2022 23:29

Are they removable cushions? Could you have the covers dry cleaned and replace the inners, maybe? If it's soaked all the way through it's unlikely to smell any better even when it dries 🤢

I have a dog and I’ve bought some special peer spray that’s suppose to get rid of smells and bacteria on furniture but you might need to wash yours

Ponoka7 · 13/11/2022 23:37

When I had unneutered rabbits the only thing that would get rid of their spray smell was hydrogen peroxide. I used to buy it from boots. You aren't supposed to, but I mixed it with other cleaners. I use pet zoflora, which seems to work well on animal smells.

OtterOnToast · 13/11/2022 23:41

If it's soaked through the actual seating cushions then I think you're stuffed tbh. Fine to wash covers etc but you won't be able to wash an actual cushioned seat as the urine will be soaked right through

I'd consider the fire option and starting again with a new sofa. And next year pop the dog park elsewhere bless her

You can get nice sofas on fb marketplace or freecycle for next to nothing or nothing.

Could you get one, and hire a man w a van for half a day to collect it and take your old one to the tip?

WinkOnlyCellophane · 14/11/2022 00:02

Oh dear, been there.

I found putting it outside for like four or five hours to air it out helped. As did heavy duty febreeze and vanish.

You’re going to have to soak the cushions in a an enzyme type solution. Spraying won’t work. Think pouring instead.

KateBalesCardi · 14/11/2022 00:07

Worth checking your home contents insurance to see whether it would be covered under accidental damage? Some policies exclude damage caused by pets but yours might not, can't hurt to ask!

sweetkitty · 14/11/2022 00:09

@Johnnysgirl That’s an idea I’ve been hesitant to take the cushion covers off as I did this before and they never did sit right again. Then maybe soaking the cushions in the bath. I paid £9 for the special enzyme spray too

Get a professional to clean it? They’ll be experts at dealing with odors etc

headstone · 14/11/2022 00:20

Rent a rug doctor and use it on the sofa ( the side part)
