Was already feeling like this, muting adverts etc; then yesterday I watched this: (Planet of the Humans by Jeff Gibbs) and I'm so done with the human race now I just want to hide in my little house and forget the world. I've been away from work and just know when I go back on Tuesday we'll already be overrun with fucking xmas music, decorations etc... I have gc and already feel angry about how much crap they have. I would buy them books but they literally don't even read or look after them. I get called scrooge because I only ever put up decorations (if I bother) in the week before, ffs! Is there anywhere on this planet that's xmas free, please?

BosaNova and Gumreduction my friend is absolutely not a martyr, nor will she have a cat's bum mouth. Only on MN can you get such an assumption.

She is crying out of stress to "please" others.
Of course that's martyr

Nope, if she’s crying to a friend in mid November about Christmas and being run ragged etc…. Then how do imagine she will be on Christmas Day other than tearful and moody?

Gumreduction · 14/11/2022 14:17

And she is visiting a friend for coffee on a Monday morning - doesn’t sound like the hard life

@MotherOfPuffling

Does Henrietta come in her own pit, all ready to be decorated?

Where do you live that they do this? I'd love it.

I live alone and don't have the full use of my left arm, I can't deal with getting a real tree to settle into a pot or stand and I hate them being chopped down for Christmas. I don't have a garden so I can't keep a living tree here. My friends have homes several, but we all only have cars, not vans, so bring one back to me each year is a big drama.

Having one visit for Christmas would be Epic!!

It is definitely the easiest and nicest option for those us with mobility issues / without gardens! I’m in London, but friends in Bristol and Brighton do something similar. Worth looking online to see if there is a company offering something in your area 😊

Erm some of us don't do 9-5 mon to fri😁

MotherOfPuffling · 14/11/2022 14:12

Well it’s perfect for anyone without a garden, or who, like me, apparently has the thumb of death when it comes to plants! I tried having a tree in a pot and bringing it in each year, but they kept dying. I refuse to have a plastic tree, so for now this is good. Also I would have to hire someone to carry the tree in and out of the house anyway, so this isn’t THAT much more expensive. Essentially it’s a good solution for us city dwellers with no garden or a tiny garden and no gardening ability 😊
(PS thank you for clarifying what you meant, it’s hard to convey tone in the written word, and I appreciated you making it clear you weren’t being snarky. Can be hard to tell on here!)

Renting sounds like a good idea.
I have no gardening ability, so I like the sound of someone else looking after the tree.

Hmm She could be a nurse. There's plenty of other jobs that are not 9-5 office jobs.

My point is…. When I’m “run ragged” about something… I generally don’t have time to visit a friend for coffee to talk about how run ragged I am!

Unlucky for you eh. It’s almost as if we are all different with different lives/priorities/coping mechanisms.

Yes... if you look at the Christian celebration, then the season of advent is penitential which means no actual celebration till Xmas day and then the 12 days. I have many catholic friends who won't put the tree up till Xmas Eve. Of course, Xmas is just a winter celebration now for many. Everything is so over done everywhere and I get that the OP gets called a Scrooge but she is right! I'd rather have less and appreciate than give myself a headache and stress over delivering some amazing celebration. It's even harder when you have children as of course they compare to others

Tree up 24th December down 12th night I’m going right back to old fashioned way three days of hibernation I can’t wait, treats and buffet food my big meal Christmas Eve.I’m 9n my own now no grumpy ex husband to bring down December. So looking to it.

But where are the Easter eggs???? It's never to early to stockpile those.

I saw Linder mini eggs in Tesco today I couldn’t believe it. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

I absolutely hate it. I suppose I have quite an 'austere' personality and the whole festival of excess makes me incredibly uncomfortable, which has heightened as I've become more enviromentalist. Once my mother passes I plan to spend it with a friend who lives in Nepal but for now I just keep my mouth shut and occupy myself with the chores associated with helping her host. She always hosts but it inevitably means I do the heavy cleaning of her house prior and a fair bit of the food prep.

You are an environmentalist but plan to spend Christmases with someone who lives in Nepal?

Sorry, is this supposed to be a parody, or do you not réalisé how ridiculous that is?

I did have a chuckle at that. Aeroplane fuel vs some tinsel…

id be very interested to hear your response to this!

TenTonTessa · 14/11/2022 14:55

Top Tip: if the Tesco 'British Tapas at the over crowded get together' ads are stalking you around the internet, Google something you don't need or want, septic tank is my go to.
Easier to ignore a cone shaped, water treatment plant.

YANBU.

I hate it. I won't bother to state all the reasons as I could do without a new asshole being torn.

FourChimneys · 14/11/2022 15:33

For those critisising my friend for having time available on a Monday morning for a coffee, it was squeezed in between the caring responsibilities she has for two family members. I don't begrudge her having a quick coffee while her mother is at a day centre if she's been up half a dozen times in the night with her as well as attending to another disabled person.

But I'm sure some of you think she should have been scrubbing chimneys or something.

greenhousegal · 14/11/2022 15:33

I see family all year round. They have kids I don't. I enjoyed the fun of Christmas Day when those kids were younger and so was I!

Now I avoid Christmas like the plague. No one is offended, I can do my own thing so it's just me and DP in pjs on the day. No pressure when I said I was opting out.

However it is nigh on impossible to avoid it day to day over the Christmas period. So you go somewhere for a walk, no parking or PT is erratic. Cafes pubs jammed. Kids squealing everywhere and I know that's normal and as trying for the parents as it is for me!

But by and large I just let it pass me by. Full fridge and freezer and batten down the hatches for me.

palygold · 14/11/2022 15:36

3WildOnes · 13/11/2022 13:51

It hasn't even begun yet.
I love Christmas and view it as a month long celebration with my decorations going up the first weekend of December. What is it that you don't like? Can you not just leave those bits out and keep the bits you do enjoy.

Going by other threads it has! I think that's part of what people inject to.
