Ringworm on scalp

I've posted in children's health but haven't had any response as yet, so posted here for more traffic.

DC developed ringworm on his scalp inJune. I went to the pharmacy and bought canesten to treat it.

Didn't fully clear so visited the GP who prescribed an anti fungal steroid cream. It cleared and then developed on his arm and cheek. Used the cream and cleared up.

Now it seems that every time his hair is cut (shaved) the ringworm on scalp flares up again. Went to GP 2 weeks ago and more cream prescribed. It hasn't cleared this time and developed into a small lump where the original ring worm was.

I visited the GP with DC again last week expecting an anti fungal oral medication to be prescribed but GP referred to paediatric dermatology instead.

From the NHS website/ NICE guidelines it appears that ringworm on scalp doesn't respond to topical treatments and should be treated with oral anti fungal medication and shampoo.

AIBU to go back to the GP requesting the oral anti fungal medication and shampoo, rather than waiting on a dermatologist appointment which could take are weeks and in the meantime the ring worm is getting worse.

Sorry for posting here but I'm quite stressed about it. Think DC has caught it from a child he plays with who has developed a huge lump with it. I don't want my DC to go the same way and by the looks of it the GP hasn't taken in to account the infection is on the scalp and will need treating with oral meds.

Is he getting reinfected from the clippers?

Throw them away or move barbers

gruffalossoldier · 13/11/2022 10:40

I don't think it's reinfection from the clippers as surely it would be in different places.

It's on one spot which indicates the infection is not clearing up from the hair follicle. Hence the need to for oral medication.

My son had a bad case of ringworm on his scalp and it was discovered to be from the local barbers. So many school boys all had the same and they all go to the same place.

Do you use clippers at home? Have they been thoroughly cleaned with barbicide? If it's a barbers have you reported back to them?

My sons took ages to go properly it was awful. Luckily we had treatment from the GP which eventually worked, I think he had oral meds and anti fungal cream.

@Shiningstarr it could well be the barbers. But surely he'd get it on different areas on his scalp. It's re-occurring in the same spot.

He's got a GP appointment today so will ask for the oral anti fungal medication and shampoo.

Thank you for your suggestions though

Have you made the barbers aware?

traintraveller · 14/11/2022 09:27

The lump could be a kerion. As well as oral meds and shampoo the guidance is also that members of the family are treated with shampoo. Has fungal infection been confirmed? Perhaps the GP isn't sure of the diagnosis.

gruffalossoldier · 14/11/2022 09:29

@Shiningstarr yes made the barbers aware.

@Shiningstarr yes made the barbers aware.

That's good, it's so contagious so they would need to thoroughly clean (which they should do anyway).

Hope you get it sorted

I think the lump is a kerion that has developed as the ringworm hasn't been treated properly. I.e goes with topical cream then comes back.

From what I can gather that's why oral meds have to be taken and shampoo used, which the GP hasn't prescribed.

Seeing a different doctor today so hopefully they'll prescribe oral meds.
