Christmas lights etiquette

Slightly pointless thread and a sign that I probably need to do more interesting things on a Saturday night but.....

We usually have loads of Christmas lights outside our house. We don't go overboard with presents etc I but just love being festive, yeah I'm probably bit of a saddo but there you go.

This year, is it in bad taste to do this? Should I cut back to just a twinkly string above the door? We are definitely feeling the cost of living crisis at the momentum but our energy bills are fixed so won't cost us any extra. Obviously we should all be mindful of the environment though. We usually put them up 2nd week of Dec.

Why would it be bad taste?

Good lord, the things people get their knickers in a twist over never ceases to amaze me

You know, I really don't think people think all that deeply about these things. Most people have much better, more important, things to worry about. If they are that concerned, then they haven't got anything else to get het up over.

Thanks for all the replies! Whoever said this could only be an issue in Mumsnet is so right, thanks for the perspective, made me laugh!!!

And yes, I meant a fixed tariff, not fixed bills (wouldn't that be nice).

The lights are not flashing and the neighbours opposite say they look fwd to them every year, the other house has an equal amount of lights so I don't think they are annoying anyone. We don't actually have THAT many.

I love walking round with the kids looking at people's lights I'm glad others still do that.

Anyway, the lights will be going up mid-Dec, I agree with all the comments re virtue signalling, so true. I think it was more the environmental factor that was concerning me. Like most people, I've jumped on the bandwagon and made a lot of changes in recent years to be more green. Maybe the fact I'm now a committed veggie and we always walk to school will make up for it.

No. Christmas lights cost pennies to run.
