To ask what your maternity pay scheme is like?

As a teacher, mine is set out by the burgundy book:

For the first six weeks, you get 90 per cent of your average pay. After that you get the basic rate of statutory maternity pay, which, at the date of publication, is £151.97 per week, for up to 33 weeks. The remainder is unpaid.

Just wondering how this compared to other jobs and industries?

London public sector 26 weeks full pay, 13 weeks statutory and 13 weeks unpaid - v grateful for it!

MuddlingThrough1724 · 12/11/2022 20:24

Private sector, same as you, statutory only unfortunately.

JLQ1020 · 12/11/2022 20:25

Financial services. Full paid for 6 months, stat pay 3 months then 3 months unpaid.
Pretty good.

Hugasauras · 12/11/2022 20:25

That's just the basic package so a lot of people will just get that. But don't teachers usually get a better package? Certainly in our area you do. 13 weeks full pay here and then the rest SMP, so your local authority area must be a bit stingy!

Deut28 · 12/11/2022 20:26

Civil servant - 26 weeks full pay, 13 weeks statutory, then 13 weeks unpaid, but I think this is pretty generous compared to a lot of places. Also very generous on how much unused annual leave you can carry over from previous year, so that can get you a bit longer on full pay if you plan ahead.

BuffaloCauliflower · 12/11/2022 20:27

That’s normal statutory, everyone gets 90% for the first 6 weeks.

I work for a smaller charity and we offer enhanced pay of 90% for 12 weeks after 2.5 years service. Not amazing but better than nothing.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 12/11/2022 20:28

OP isn't that just the standard mat pay everyone gets as a minimum if they qualify for mat pay?

Mine is 6 months full pay, 3 stat mat and 3 unpaid

mobear · 12/11/2022 20:28

Private sector/ law - 6 months full, 3 months stat, 3 months unpaid.

Ditto, happy to say as it's not outing that my company is Nationwide.

Daisymae55 · 12/11/2022 20:29

Work in an independent clothing shop and I get exactly the same as you

Puppers · 12/11/2022 20:29

Private sector. I got SMP only and it was the last straw for me. I didn’t return to the job as they clearly didn’t value me and after the commitment I’d shown to the business for years, to only be offered the bare minimum they could legally get away with paying me was an insult. Very shortsighted of them because it was undoubtedly vastly more expensive to recruit and train my replacement than it would have been to offer me a decent package.
I’m still in touch with my ex-boss and he was recently complaining about high turnover. “We just can’t fill the roles we advertise, and even when we do they don’t stay long”. No shit.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 12/11/2022 20:31

I got 39 weeks at £143 a week maternity allowance with DC1 as the rate in NI is lower than the rest of the UK.
I got 39 weeks at £151 a week maternity allowance with DC2 two years later
Self-employed so mine was NI contributions-based.

Hugasauras · 12/11/2022 20:32

My work (if you've been there more than a year) is 8 weeks full pay, 18 weeks half pay plus SMP, 13 weeks SMP and 13 weeks unpaid. That requires you to return for at least three months after maternity leave. Private sector, publishing.

Cw112 · 12/11/2022 20:32

Charity sector I get 18 weeks full pay then the rest smp and the option to take the final 13 weeks unpaid to make a year.

Noname99 · 12/11/2022 20:34

Burgundy Book’ maternity pay is:

For the first four weeks, you will be paid at 100 per cent of salary if eligible.
Weeks 5 - 6 are paid at 90 per cent of salary if eligible, and weeks 7 - 18 at 50 per cent of salary plus the standard Statutory Maternity Pay rate of £151.97 per week.
The remaining 21 weeks are paid at the standard Statutory Maternity Pay rate.

SkinnyFatte · 12/11/2022 20:38

Fully paid for 6 months, half pay for last six months. Public sector.

yoyo1234 · 12/11/2022 20:44

Full pay 1 year 😁

Simonjt · 12/11/2022 20:46

Private sector financial services.

Maternity, adoption or shared leave, six months full pay, three months 50% pay and three months unpaid.

Baconand · 12/11/2022 20:49

6 weeks full, 12 weeks half, 21 statutory- HE sector. It’s ok but other universities are better.

NewJobGoingCrazy · 12/11/2022 20:50

@yoyo1234 that's ace what industry do you work in?

In my job I'm just leaving I had 6 weeks 90%, then the rest stat Mat pay plus half pay for 33 weeks - really decent.

In my new job it's just statutory :(

RidingMyBike · 12/11/2022 20:52

Public sector - 19 weeks on full pay, then SMP to nine months, then nothing for three months.

I also got caught out as no pension contributions were paid in the 3 unpaid months so I ended up paying for them as a lump sum to avoid missing out.

Lonecatwithkitten · 12/11/2022 20:52

26 weeks at 90% of pay, then SMP. Return to work bonus of 12 weeks pay paid at the end of your first month back.

yoyo1234 · 12/11/2022 20:53

Civil service . Great pension as well. Amazing maternity (me and lots of my colleagues make use of it 😉). It does vary within the civil service so look into individual departments .

VeggieSalsa · 12/11/2022 20:53

18 weeks full, months 9-12 unpaid and stat in between.

Private sector financial services.

Coffeaddict · 12/11/2022 20:54

Lecturer at a university, I get 6 months full pay.

DP works in a high street bank and he gets 4 weeks pat leave and 3 months shared parental leave
