AIBU to be annoyed about a dog roaming free near play park

AIBU to think a rottweiler dog should not be able to roam free?? We have a fab play park near us but there is a rottweiler that lives very close by and on nice days he is left to roam free . He is a well known dog and everyone says he is lovely and wouldn't hurt anyone but because of his size my kids are really scared of him and it is stopping them being able to go the park with their friends.

Any dog off the lead is an out of control dog. No dog or any animal can be trusted 100%

I would report to the local council, dog warden, police etc

I've no time for selfish, lazy, irresponsible dog owners

The law doesn't agree with you there. Dogs are allowed off lead and are not classed as out of control if their owner can recall them and they do not cause a bother.

The owners need the local dog warden/RSCPA to go have a chat with them. Regardless of breed, it is unacceptable to just open a door and let your dog roam free in public if you are not with it.

My local FB group is full of posts about a JRT that gets let out in similar circumstances too. His owners also have mobility problems. Poor thing roams the streets and might get run over one day.

Please report it... for the dog's sake.

This is true but the owner isn't there. The dog is being left to wander unattended so the owner can't recall the dog if needed. So there is literally no control.

No I know that. The pp didn't say the dog in question though

The breed of dog is irrelevant,I’d check if the dog is trained first before calling anyone, dogs of any breed and training can turn.My little girl was bitten by a trained chihuahua, any dog can turn it’s always in their nature really, they shouldn’t be so scared of just the rottie if they’re gonna be fearful.I’d call someone up if any dog was walking unattended. But if it’s nice and seemingly trained with a owner supervising them,I think your kids will need to face their fears. If their old enough to walk to the park and want to go to public places alone especially, they need to be prepared for things they may have no experience with eg what I’d they come across a druggie walking around high? The world is unpredictable, you can’t censor everything,if the dogs causing no trouble and has a good reputation I wouldn’t be worried. Is it just the size their intimidated of?Either way I doubt the dog will be stopped from walking around on a leash,or on the fields, but they seem to be scared of the dog even if they pass it on a street so it’s inevitable that they’ll have to face it.I understand they won’t want to be on the swings and have the dog coming sniffing around but the dog going on a walk around the block won’t be stopped,so I think they should just have to let go of the fear if they want to go to the park.My dogs quite a big lad,he’s a labradoodle so very sweet breed never met a nasty one,and people get intimidated by him and his size but not the other dogs,I just think no matter the size of a dog the owners need to be near in case anything goes wrong. As long as that’s happening I don’t see a problem.

Yea I’d ring up about that it’s just cautionary at the end of the day and even then it helps to protect the dog as if another dog is reactive and try’s to attack them its gonna be bad for them, and the other owner as they won’t be able to get the owner to help or comfort the dog.

I feel sad for the dog. He’s vulnerable and based on that alone I would report to the RSPCA.

Wow, you would have been a basket case in the 70’s when quite a few dogs were out and about.

What’s this got to do with it?

OP, it’s completely bonnets that the people consider it appropriate to let a dog roam unattended.

You should report it to the dog warden, as others have said .
