School punishment

Aibu to think that it’s abusive to make a class of 7 year olds sit for 20 minutes without being allowed to do anything at all as punishment because they were too noisy?

The teacher may be struggling and if this 20 minutes of silence means that the children in the class know that the teacher will follow through with expectations of behaviour in the future, then it might be an investment into productive and effective learning in the future.

I don't think it is as non-useful as you might think. Life does involve the skills of learning to sit quietly at times, dealing with boredom, having some self control, being with your own thoughts and not just rushing noisily headlong into the next thing. The world is 'always on' these days. It won't have done them any harm.

I wholeheartedly agree. As I said above, I think everyone would benefit from doing this.

'Cruel'??? Jesus H. Christ on a bike.

I don’t think it’s constructive or terribly realistic (my child is incapable of sitting still in silence for twenty min if his life depended on it), and I hate whole class punishments for things, but it’s hardly abusive or traumatising.

@Thegreenballoon

i don't think I'm capable of sitting quietly for 20 minutes on an uncomfortable school chair with nothing to do!!

actually there's no 'don't think' about it! I would be unless you held a gun to my head. That might just distract me enough!

@Schnookypachooky

abusive???

FFS, how dare you try to diminish the real abuse too many children suffer.

Lopilo · 12/11/2022 12:52

20mins is quite a long time and also a waste of time, but it isn’t abusive. I would have loved this when I was at school as I liked daydreaming without interruption. Comments above about SEN kids not being able to do this is not accurate. A lot of SEN kids love peace and quiet and would be quite happy doing this, especially if it shut the rowdy hectic kid up for a while.
