To rent to refugees when not in the area

Hello
I have to move hundreds of miles away for work
So I need to rent my property.
I am thinking of renting to refugees but as I will be living away I won’t be able to support them or be available to sort out anything going wrong in the house.
So does anyone know if this is feasible?
If so, does anyone know of any schemes which either take over the house and then rent to refugees or support refugees with housing.
House is in North of England.
Thanks

Do you mean for money as a landlord, or under the Homes for Ukraine scheme? For the latter - there are many who now have been in the country for a few months and need to move out of the initial host’s house, maybe for to change if circumstances or because the host could only ever do it for 6 months. These people would be quite settled, have their work or benefits and school places etc so wouldn’t need much help with paperwork or language. They’d still need support if something goes wrong in the house. The local council’s refugee team will know of people in this situation

@Pepperama - thanks for the suggestion
As I still have a mortgage I have to cover that.
I was actually thinking about on Ukrainian refugees because the Government seemed to offer more support to them and the ones I know of are settled, or appear to be. But you have have given me food for thought. Thank you

Is this a permanent or temporary move?

Blondewithredlips · 12/11/2022 00:52

You will need to get permission from your mortgage provider and they will have a lot of conditions attached if they agree.

Contact your local housing authority or local charities who support refugees/ homeless people. I worked for a charity before and we placed homeless young people who we felt were tenancy ready in private rental flats as a stepping stone to getting their own place and then helped them manage the tenancy and dealt with any issues that came up.

Regardless of who you rent to you'll need someone on hand to sort out the repairs that will be your responsibility so you'll either need to pay an agent or have a friend or family member oversee work you organise. Your local trust will also have young people who are unaccompanied needing safe accommodation with their peer group so you could also see if your local 16+social work team would work with you on this. I wouldn't just cater to Ukrainian refugees, I work with young people from all over the world and they all just want to be safe and do well in life.

Thanks everyone. It would be a temporary move, but likely to be for several years. I hadn’t thought of renting to young people. I think I was looking more towards a family. I do think the young people idea is great, but my area is semi rural. It is well connected with bus services and while not a youthful village there are young people in it.

One of the neighbouring villages houses refugees from all over the world and there are several regular meet ups for the community and refugees and it seems to be going well. So I knew there would be some support locally and this gave me the initial idea.

Our mortgage company didn't have any conditions other than the fact we intended to return.
Actually we ended up selling the house.

My mortgage provider insisted on going through an agent that checked references and income and said could repossess if conditions were breached.

covilha · 12/11/2022 01:51

Thanks- fwiw my mortgage provider also only wants to know I will return
Not sure if housing young homeless or refugees will have a different response but I can’t see why it should

If you rent your house out and expect to return to it exactly when you want I would caution you to come up with a plan b. Especially in the current situation where rentals are competitive and council hoisting scarce; you may find evicting your tenants difficult and potentially a lengthy process (+/- involving the courts)

frozengoose · 12/11/2022 02:00

Our insurance company OP did insist that we renting to people on benefits.
I think the legislation may have changed on that in the last five years.

frozengoose · 12/11/2022 02:01

We weren't renting.

Waitymatey · 12/11/2022 02:10

Thanks @Moraxella - I was wondering if it was possible to rent the house to a Housing Association authority so they could delete tenants indirectly.
I had not considered the change in legislation about short-term rentals. That is a very good point.
