I've NC for this

I work for a large company, sites across the UK and 30,000 employees. We sell used items from £500 to £50,000 each. We use a private auction to sell some of the items

I've been there six months and was told by the general manager that we do not accept returns. I can't go in to detail but the sale of goods act doesn't apply

I've now been told by the auction manager that we do accept returns and that I can't tell buyers that we don't

I feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place as the general manger has now said that I'm to "actively encourage" buyers to not return items that turn out to have a fault we didn't know about, it's a risk they take as the items are not checked before sale

I've no idea how or what that really means, am I being told to lie?

I've asked for clarity but not had a response. Part of me thinks it's because they don't want the response in black and white and part of an email chain as they know what they're asking of me is wrong/incorrect

Looking for opinions on how to manage this please
