Ours is going up in December when the tenancy renews, but we've been here 4 years and it hadn't increased so far so I think it's fair enough. It's a rise of 6.25% which seems reasonable after 4 years and given current inflation figures.

FatOaf · 11/11/2022 06:43

My nephew has been told he can't renew his tenancy because the landlords want to decorate the house and re-let it at a higher rent, which he wouldn't be able to afford. So he'll be moving back in with his mum & dad.

ShiningStarQueen · 11/11/2022 06:59

Your nephew’s landlord may find they can’t let it out @FatOaf Years ago, when we used to rent, our landlord decided to do a full redecoration when we moved out. This included the new boiler that we’d asked and asked for as it was broken. Anyway, we checked on RightMove and it was £300pcm more. After a few weeks, it was still on there and, bear in mind, this was a really popular area. It was eventually rented out for only £50pcm more than we were paying. It would take him years to recoup back the money he spent out 😂

Yes, mine goes up on Christmas Eve, by 3x the amount it went up last year. Landlord is mortgage-free so it's just greed. Merry Christmas!

SeasonsHeatings · 11/11/2022 07:13

Our landlord came around to let us know she isn't putting up the rent this year due to the cost of living situation. Think we found a good one!

itsjustnotok · 11/11/2022 07:16

Our renewal is due in March. Every year I have the same anxiety that he will kick us out lol. We’ve been here 12 years now so you’d think I’d have it in my head by now he would probably let us know way in advance. I’m expecting the rent to increase but worried about the amount. Will just have to suck it up!

Changerofthename1 · 11/11/2022 07:17

@ShiningStarQueen somewhat different market now.

PanicAtTheBigTesco · 11/11/2022 07:19

I've been expecting it as I know the building service charges have doubled and we also needed a new bathroom fitted but so far heard nothing.

I've never met/spoken to my landlord as her son manages it all but he's pretty decent as far as landlords go so hoping it stays the same...

Greedy bastards Angry

My mum's just went up from £700 to £850 for a one bed flat. When I queried such a large increase I was told we were lucky as they could kick her out and get £1000 a month easily. Looking around at prices here, they are right!

pastafairyan · 11/11/2022 07:30

When I moved into my housing association home it was £320/month. Five years on rent is £400/month.

What amount did it go up last year? Three times not much is not much.

The landlord being mortgage-free may have expenses to consider about the property.

Very different now I think. My landlord decided to 'sell' in the summer so evicted me, tried for a month then put it back up for rent when I'd moved and put the rent up £300. Did nothing to the house, it needed a few upgrades including carpets and some kitchen updates. I feel for the new people really.
But at the moment, locally, houses are just flying off the rental market.

MightyAtlantic · 11/11/2022 07:45

No, I'm in Scotland and there's a rent cap currently in place until the end of March, including for private rented tenancies. I don't know what will happen after that though!

x2boys · 11/11/2022 08:31

Slightly but my house is housing associstion ,do incresses are never dramatic thankfully .

Oh that's revolting behaviour from your landlord. Inexcusable. We need more legislation to ensure they can't behave like this

dadadeedadada · 11/11/2022 08:39

Mine went up by 250 in September. When I expressed my concern I was told to apply for universal credit. Great, so the government is now directly lining a landlords pockets. And I thought councils were corrupt.

PurplePastaBake · 11/11/2022 08:53

Mines gone up by 5%. It’s the first increase in the 6 years I’ve lived here and still well below market value though so no issue paying. My LL’s business was hard hit during covid so I’m grateful it’s taken until now to increase it.

It depends on the circumstances. On the face of it it's disgraceful but without the facts we can't tell.

For example, if it's a £1000 a month flat and last year's increase was £10, this year's would be £30 which is a 3% increase.

The timing for Christmas Eve might be because the OP signed a six month contract on 24th June and the landlord can only increase the rent when there's a contract renewal.

(Or they're just greedy bastards, which is more likely.)
