AIBU to wear a Fairisle jumper as soon as it gets cold and not keep for Xmas?

I love Fairisle and wear them as soon as it gets a bit chilly. But a shop assistant said to me the other day that she loved my jumper as it was lovely and festive. And I was a bit embarrassed, do people think they are Christmas jumpers? It’s is navy/brown/purple so not festive colours.

What company is that then?

Fair Isle is a STYLE of knitting from Scotland which has been around for 100's of years. The knitting is done on circular needles using multiple colours of wool.

Mrsherdwick · 10/11/2022 20:01

Also isn’t Fair Isle an Island?

Yes, I assumed that’s where it came from?

ofwarren · 10/11/2022 20:03

I don't actually own one but they wear them on the new All Creatures Great and Small and they look so lovely. Such a classic, heritage piece.
I watched a programme a few years back about them being made on Shetland by hand. Fascinating.

Selkiesarereal · 10/11/2022 20:04

Fair isle is a variety of patterns in a similar intricate style. Usually in lambs wool as that was all that was available.

However, different knitters have their own unique style but don’t try and rip it off as your own - looking at you Chanel!

Oh. I'm embarrassed reading the replies, as I should be BlushGrin sorry @Ruizy Blush

You sound ridiculous and also that you created this thread to promote this company and then all the posters have also, for some magically unknown reason, just happened to be on here at the same time to also heap praise on this company that nobody has ever heard of.

Ouch, this is an embarrassing post. Turns out YOU sound ridiculous.

As others have said, fairisle is a pattern/style from, shockingly, Fair Isle.

Keyansier · 10/11/2022 20:06

To be fair though how is anyone that is not from there meant to know about stuff from the Shetland Islands unless they have reason to make money or influence from it?

Cross post - that’s a good natured follow-up from you @Keyansier Grin

Because it’s basic common knowledge. It’s not specialised Mastermind stuff.

Although now you can expect post after post correcting you, maybe save yourself the pain just hide the thread now 😊

Fair Isle isn't a company it's a style of knitting with different colours. I knit my own.

Mrsherdwick · 10/11/2022 20:10

Well I believe Lake District sheep rule anyway!! Baa Raa lamb!!

Lcb123 · 10/11/2022 20:11

I think they’re ‘wintery’ but not Christmas. It seems a waste to only wear at Christmas!

They are very much in fashion and if you Google fairisle jumper you will see that they are currently being stocked everywhere.
Aran jumpers are the same principle. Originally a heritage brand from the Aran Islands but any shop can sell an Aran jumper as its the pattern.

My 3 year old child can recognise a Fairisle jumper (she has one) and she’s not aware of Scotland! How do you not know this? Mind blown.

I think rather than Christmassy she really meant seasonal. So that it was nice and wintery.

I actually don’t own any proper Christmas jumpers because I think it’s a waste to buy something that can only be worn one short time of the year. But I have loads of other nice jumpers that I wear whenever it’s cold!

Not a company.

Erm, they do sell them outside of the Shetland Islands. That’s like saying ‘well why would anyone outside of Turkey ever have heard of Turkish delight, unless they’re trying to sell it?’

It's a pattern not a company

You must be mortified to be so judgemental but so completely wrong 😂

youcantry · 10/11/2022 20:18

@Keyansier I'm a Londoner born and bred and have been wearing fair isle knitwear since childhood, as did my kids! I'm now 50 and plan to wear one of mine, a beautiful cardigan, tomorrow! It's a traditional style of knitwear. Maybe google some images......it is not a company being promoted 🤦🏻‍♀️

It’s really well known, which is why so many people commented (as you said yourself “all the posters have also, for some magically unknown reason, just happened to be on here at the same time”). It’s not something only known about in the Shetland Isles. Maybe quit while you’re ahead behind.
