To ask, What do I need for my new job?

Just that - what do I need to bring on the first day in a new role? I've asked and they've said nothing in particular but I know there will be things that will make life easier/make me more organised.

I'm having very little time off between my current and new role (1 day) so need to get my sh*t together asap.

It's a more senior (and better paid!) role so I need to look the part and have bought a small capsule wardrobe to see me through till Christmas sales.

Stationary/organisation/food wise what do I need to make life easier?

I'm in the same boat so following along to see others suggestions, I've got myself a new diary and a water bottle. That's it, we're not allowed to have our own pens unfortunately otherwise I'd get a nice pack of decent pens but if your new role allows them, definitely handy to have

BurntOutBusyBee · 09/11/2022 12:10

Ooh new pens, thank you. It seems obvious but I've got so little time to think/plan I'm overlooking the simple things!

Water bottle
Pen

Notepad and pen(s), definitely. It's possible that no one will have thought to organise such things in advance for you so it will save time at the start of the day.

I'd take a sandwich, or similar, and snacks/drink so that you're prepared regardless of whether you end up eating in a staff restaurant, or going out, or whatever, and you're able to just 'go with the flow' on your first day.

I'm not sure what else you can prepare, without knowing the details of the role.

StarsandStones · 09/11/2022 12:17

Will you buy lunch or take from home? Reusable coffee cup/travel mug, bento style food container?
Bag, shoes and accessories that fit with your capsule wardrobe?

BurntOutBusyBee · 09/11/2022 13:25

Perfect thank you everyone!
I'm not sure on the food situation just yet as I've not worked in this type of environment plus my role is very changeable in a day so lunch breaks aren't set times.

If you have a desk, a box of tissues. I'm in an accounts role so I took a couple of my most used training books to stay in my bottom drawer in case I need to refer to them. I also keep a charger wire in my drawer which has come in handy

Westendbuoys · 09/11/2022 13:43

Diary/notepad and pen
Mug & coffee/tea
Water bottle
Mints or chewing gum
Tissues
Own lunch - I take something easy like a sandwich until I know what the kitchen situation is. When I last started a new job I went out for lunch with my new manager on my first day and ate my sad little sandwich on the train home!

StarsandStones · 09/11/2022 13:48

Pack of nice biscuits to make friends 😉

BurntOutBusyBee · 09/11/2022 13:54

Amazing - really appreciate this. Gonna collate it all and do a shop tomorrow for it all!

Definitely packed lunch which you can always discard. Pen and paper. Makes an impression on many I know.

thedevilinablackdress · 09/11/2022 14:06

I wouldn't take in biscuits on your first day. You want to make a good impression with your work and your self rather than handing out treats.
Otherwise just go with the flow for a few days and you'll work out what facilities there are and what you might need.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 09/11/2022 14:06

Notebook and pen.

I always made sure these were on any new start's desk ahead of their arrival.

A notebook with dividers/sections
New pens
Highlighters
Post it's

It really depends on the company and the role. Office based role at large company - perhaps lunch (if they don't have a cafeteria), money for lunch and coffee (if they do), snacks, reusable coffee cup, water bottle, and phone charger. In this sort of role you may spend the first day meeting colleagues and at a desk by yourself reading and / or doing IT set up. This sort of company should have all stationery you need. If a smaller company, or you have doubts, take your own stationery (notebook and pen should be fine). Don't take treats for colleagues - it wouldn't look professional imo.

HungryandIknowit · 09/11/2022 16:23

And also a laptop bag if you won't be given one.

BurntOutBusyBee · 09/11/2022 18:05

Thanks everyone
I'm stressing a bit now, it's a big role and people will expect me to hit the ground running

I always bring little drawer organiser trays which come in handy to keep them in order. Will you have your own office or a desk in a shared area? That makes a huge difference. For instance as finance director I had an office and could decorate my desk etc whereas now I'm a teacher I have to be conscious that things can be accessed by others!

BurntOutBusyBee · 10/11/2022 08:38

I'll share an office with 3 other Senior staff and will have my own desk and drawers.

I know there will be a lot of things that will make life easier that I'll only realise after starting but these posts are really helpful to get a basic idea!

Had my first day in my new role today so can offer some additional suggestions that I didn't think of yesterday, definitely a planner, pen, notepad, but also if you're going to be doing Skype or zoom calls, a headset or headphones If they aren't provided. I'd also recommend a mug and any coffee supplies unless you already know the staff kitchen situation/canteen availability. Phone charger if not provided and you're allowed to charge at work. My role requires some extra things like high vis and safety shoes but if yours doesn't then ignore that
