I took dd3 (19 months) to the dr's this am as she is really unwell. He diagnosed croup ( none of my other 5 dc's have ever had this) printed her off a prescription and off we went to chemists. 5 minutes in there and the pharmacist asked to have a word.

The dose on the prescription was for 250mg and as dd is only 19 months it should have been for just 125mg. 250mg would have been an overdose for her as she has to have it 4 times aday. Ph said she would do it but it was at my risk to give it to dd.

Like hell i was about to so i went back to gp. Receptionist took script in after i explained and came out smiling and said yes it was an oversight and that the ph was their back up

No sorry about that from dr it was just dismissed.

I know i will be double checking any prescriptions they write for me or any of my dc's from now on.

It's possible the pharmacist was willing to dispense it IF it could sometimes be given in higher doses than usual.

I once had antibiotics prescription for DD and the GP said to me that the pharmacy might query it because it is a very high (double)dose, but because the chest infection was so bad he said a higher than usual dose was needed (she ended up in hospital with antibiotics on a drip despite this higher dose as she couldnt keep anything down).

If it was one of those drugs which can vary in such circumstances, then the pharmacist was not necessarily wrong to agree to dispense it having made you aware of it.

Friedgreentomatoes - am so sorry to hear what happened to your grandmother.

If it was the abiotic I suspect then 250mg is not a dangerous dose for a child and often used for serious infections by hospital docs....but hey ho why try and find out the facts lets just take the doc out and shoot him ...after all thats what the phramacist says right and he must know best afetr all he went to med school din't he

TheFallenMadonna · 30/01/2008 20:04

Well, to be fair macdoodle, when the OP took it back to the surgery, the doctor did say it was an oversight. Which would imply it wasn't the intended dose, dangerous or not.

But all well and all that.

well macdoodle im not a doctor am i. But i certainly know the facts of what happened!

Happy Birthday Sugar34plum!!!!!
This is an Oscar Wilde quote for your thirty-fifth birthday:

'Thirty five is a very attractive age. London society is full of women of the very highest birth who have, of their own free choice, remained thirty-five for years. Lady Dumbleton is an instance in point. To my own knowledge she has been thirty-five ever since she arrived at the age of forty'

Hope your dd is better.

btw I do think it's good to write a letter to the surgery even though no harm done this time etc - it doesn't even have to be an unfriendly letter - because if it is a one-off then they won't need to do anything but if this doctor makes more mistakes than usual it will help bring it to their attention.

I would be far more concerned with the pharmacist dispensing it, than the GP making a mistake.

This happened with my dd a couple of months ago. She was given paracetamol for older children. It wasn't picked up by the ph either, and it was only when I read the bottle myself at home that I spotted the dose was too high. Dh took it back to the ph who confirmed it was the gps mistake, but swapped it anyway.

Later that day the gp in question rang me to apologise. I would say this is all you can really ask for, and I'm pretty sure she will be checking more closely now.
