About open interviews

What are these about?

I'm job hunting atm and have been invited to a couple of these. Are these just to get everyone to take time off work to go to n interview without actually shortlisting first?

Aibu to not like this as an interview technique? I used to interview a lot at work and never would have invited everyone to an open day in the middle of a week day...

I like them. They are a great, more useful way to whittle down candidates fast! Some people are good on application but in real life they don't have the disposition that the recruiter is looking for, or the reverse where they are a bit iffy as an applicant but they're keen to upskill/train/improve, and they have a brilliant personality that will fit in.
You absolutely have the option to steer clear if you're not keen - it may indicate that those companies are not a good fit for your wants and needs as an employee. Personally, I'd pop along to one to see what it's all about and don't go to any more if it's not for you :)

Thanks, I can see the benefit from the recruiter's perspective, but I would never have had all applicants attend interview before shortlisting. Especially on a weekday morning when everyone will have to take time off work 🤷‍♀️

I'm steering clear as I'm not prepared to use A/L to attend an interview which is open to all candidates. If they like my application enough to ask me to interview, I think they can invite me properly.
