To think MN should disable replies on threads older than 1 year

I've always thought this whenever zombie threads appear, so with tonight's troll triggering never-ending zombies it's come back as a thought.

Can anyone think of a good reason not to disable the reply feature on threads older than 1 year? Surely if you need to reply on a thread older than a year you're better off starting a new thread altogether?

No way! Recently saw a thread from years ago where the op actually came back with an update! I honestly don’t get the hate for zombie threads!!

JaneJeffer · 08/11/2022 23:41

Yes they should. If someone needs to reactivate they could get MN to reopen.

BagOfBollocks · 08/11/2022 23:42

YANBU OP and people have been asking them to permanently close them for years.

There's absolutely no reason why an OP can't start a new thread with a link to the old one, if they want to update.

When PBP spend their evenings raising them it ruins the board for everyone.

This is a good shout.

Maybe keep it enabled for the OP and disabled for everyone else, and the OP posting an update resets the 1 year lock timer?

There's surely some sort of solution that is better than people dragging up zombie threads by accident/on purpose. The little warning that appears doesn't seem to be foolproof

That's probably too complicated. I mean MN doesn't even have a basic edit function so I wouldn't hold your breath for that 😂

Probably just easier for the OP to link to the old one.

This! Before the recent thread I saw with an update I would have probably agreed, but it was so nice of the op to come back and update us and look back through the thread to jog my memory of the original I feel differently now

And they/you couldn't have done that if they'd started a new thread with a link to the old one?

Kedece2410 · 08/11/2022 23:50

I'd far rather they were locked. For every one OP who comes back we probably have to put up with dozens of zombie threads.

Isthatascratchonmygrandmother · 08/11/2022 23:52

Then we never would have had the poster who replied to her own thread about 6 years later, recommending a travel pushchair to herself Grin

Ofcourseshecan · 08/11/2022 23:54

I don't see what's wrong with old threads. If the OP was asking for advice, she probably won't need the new responses. But they may be useful to someone else seeking advice on the same topic.

When I need advice, I usually do a quick search for existing threads on the same topic. These sometimes answer my question so I don't need to start a new thread.

And if the thread is just for chat or entertainment, where's the harm in adding to it at any time?

ErrolTheDragon · 09/11/2022 00:03

There is the difference that if you'd posted on or watched the old thread it would appear in your threads I'm on or watch lists. You'd probably only notice a new one if it happened to be in active convos at a moment you were looking there,

Hahaha as if MN have got the tech to do that

Pretty sure they already can shut a thread to new posts and subsequently reopen it.

This^.

I have asked MN for years if a thread of x years old couldn't be a different colour.

I definitely don't want them locked off.
