To take part in NHS trial?

I'm currently TTC and I have PCOS, I have been offered a spot on the NHS LOCI trial.

I can start treatment as soon as tomorrow if I decide to take part but to be honest I'm trying to read the information and finding it really confusing. I've never heard of most of the terminology and I'm wondering if anyone could advise whether they'd do it or not.

From what I can gather the trial is To decide out of two medications called Letrozole Or Clomifene, which works best to induce ovulation.

YABU: No the consultant was just trying to sign you up (I think she's in charge of the trial) and you should just take the usual treatment. This would be clomifene.

YANBU: It sounds great and will hopefully help you to fall pregnant.

👋 hey! I’m hopefully starting this trial soon. I went for a scan and blood tests (and an impromptu smear) yesterday so just waiting on those results before I get started. How’s it going for you?

Sorry I totally missed this, I hope you got on the trial!

2 unsuccessful rounds for me and I was very emotional when the second round didn't work (still am really). Hoping round 3 is the one for me

Do you mind me asking what size follicles you're getting? Mine can't seem to grow past 14mm :(

Only For this 4th cycle they have taken the scan (follicular tracking)1st scan on 10th and 2nd on 14th day of my cycle and I will get the result on March 10,so I am not aware of the size, sure will keep posted once I get the results.

That's strange, for me they have scanned for follicle size on every cycle? Wondering why we would be receiving different treatment. For me they scan from day 10 to check the lining and follicle size

If you don't mind where are u getting treatment from? I am doing in NHS in London. This tracking is done after I asked them. When yhey did a scan grey didn't even tell me what's happening they just told u have ovulated and I received email that I can see my results on 10th of march which is 1 month from the scan.

That's really bizzare. I'm on the NHS in the west midlands.

When I go for my scans they explain everything to me and show me the follicles there and then on the screen and tell me the sizes. I also have contact with the LOCI team via WhatsApp and they always reply within the hour. If I have any questions they will also ask the hospital team and get back to me. I don't have an email address for them

It might be that we're having different experiences as I'm not currently ovulating (we think) so that's what we're currently trying to achieve

I hope you don’t mind me asking but are you doing anything else ontop of the trial to try to boost your chances? The only reason I ask is that the fertility nurse I was working with supported us both to balance our hormones and prepare our bodies for 3 months prior ( electro acupuncture, reflexology, diet, no alcohol or smoking, taking a full line up of multivitamins and probiotics). My full body was primed to conceive as soon as I started the trial and I’m now 22w on my first cycle. The reality is tough though that even if all goes well there is still so many hurdles to cross and talking to a Obgyn it’s still only a 5% chance when you ovulate( and that’s for everyone- I know it feels like everyone around you is super fertile when the pregnancy announcements pop up but I promise it’s not true). All we can do is hope and pray that everything aligns. ( this is coming from someone that had a 0% chance to conceive naturally so I try and stay positive and have loooooads of intimacy time on the week prior to ovulation and the week of- have as many baby makers in your Fallopian tubes as possible ready for ovulation- tip from my nurse)

@Sericas are you in the UK? That sounds like an amazing service but in most areas the NHS is struggling to deliver "basic" care to women let alone anything like you describe.

Sericas · 22/02/2023 18:42

Hi, yip I’m in Scotland and got my fertility treatment and trial through the NHS- the holistic treatments (reflexology etc) I paid for myself although some places will accept insurance for payment plans xx

Lakshmi12 · 22/02/2023 22:21

I was not given any extra care or advice on pre preparation on conceiving(NHS), I was just told to take 2 tablets every month and recently when I spoke with the family doctor she advised me to take follic acid tablet.

Sericas · 23/02/2023 08:26

That’s infuriating that you haven’t been given more advice preconception- even folic acid should have been recommended prior to starting the trial as a standard care practice. It was one of the first questions the consultant asked when I was being considered for the trial, “have you been taking folic acid”. I’d maybe recommend speaking to your consultant and ask what is available support group wise or if he/she can recommend any holistic treatments to coincide with your trial ie/reflexology, acupuncture, reiki, ( I used a Shakti mat aswell which promotes deep tissue relaxation, blood flow and pressure point stimulation- god I miss the mat, can’t wait to get back on it in a few months time)

I’d definitely look into what’s available round about you, we are fortunate where we live that there were free fertility groups run by the princes trust that i managed to get a place on that had nutritionists, an Obygn, and an ivf specialist to discuss the fertility journey plus a safe space to discuss the pressures and difficulties with likeminded couples. It was reassuring to talk about the struggles with other people and professionals so I’d definitely look into if there’s something similar near you.
