to say people need to say what their job is?

i've seen many threads on here in the past which are very critical of certain jobs and the people who do them.
Full disclosure i have got one of THOSE jobs.
i'm talking teacher, gp, gp receptionist, health visitor, police , social worker, nurse, midwife.I'm sure there's many others.
I just wonder what these highly critical people do? What are their jobs that they are so fantastic at? Shoukd they have to say i'm an astronaut or whatever. it's so demoralising to be constantly all lumped together as useless and I wonder what gives them the right to blanket slag off entire professions !
Some of us are doing our upmost to provide the best service we can

I’m going to go with GP receptionist. They do get a bad rep but just don’t take it personally. Surely you’ve encountered shit people in various lines of work too?

PollyAmour · 08/11/2022 15:12

I'm a nurse. I earn around 30k a year, looking after frail elderly patients, helping them get back on their feet so they can go home with support in place. I love my job, and I'd rather be happy and fulfilled at work than be earning megabucks doing something different.

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/11/2022 15:12

I feel you op. I too have one of THOSE jobs that people love to slag off. I rise to the bait in my head but rarely post on those threads these days. Haters gonna hate, lol

AriettyHomily · 08/11/2022 15:12

My job is very niche, not special but there aren't many of us and it doesn't impact the public in any way. When there are serval thousands go receptions, gps, emergency service workers etc you will always get the complaints here not the good bits (for the most part). But like trip advisor, people love a moan.

Huntswomanonthemove · 08/11/2022 15:14

Anyone can say anything on the internet. It wouldn't mean anything if someone comes on here and says they are a doctor, solicitor, refuge collector, cleaner. It's pointless asking them to say.

MamGetUsOneOfThemToKeep · 08/11/2022 15:17

It is irritating but then it's an anonymous forum. That people vent on

It's not personal. No more than reading tabloid newspaper stories misrepresenting your profession.

In my experience people who complain generically about a whole profession as "them" often aren't the easiest of characters to deal with if that's how they word their thread/ posts, given they are prone to sweeping generalisations from their perspective. (So I wonder sometimes what they may be missing out from their story, their responsibility in it...)

Circumferences · 08/11/2022 15:19

Don't take it so personally!

The reason why professions like teachers, social workers, GP receptionists etc are full of exhausted overworked and underpaid people having no choice but to be doing a shit job, is because we've had over a decade of austerity, government cuts and absolutely no investment in these areas.

It's not a criticism of the actual people doing the work it's a criticism based on the frustration almost all of us have had to endure when dealing with the utterly shit public services we have in the UK.

Sandysandwich · 08/11/2022 15:22

It is annoying but I just assumed it was because all of those jobs are fairly common, well known and involve working with other people. So everybody sort of knows what they do, or thinks they do, and has interacted with them professionally.
I have met other nurses, teachers, gps, receptionists etc in their jobs far more than I would meet statistical analysts or someone who works in marketing or research.

Lots of people encounter the police or social workers etc in their professional and personal lives, so they feel within their rights to complain about them, much more than they can complain about corporate accounts managers. Especially as its easier to get other people involved in an argry discussion about teachers for example, because on a parenting website- most people will have known a teacher they hated, or thought was terrible at their job, was mean to them when they were 10 or who failed their child. Its harder to encite relateable rage about one crap marine biologist that you met.

picklemewalnuts · 08/11/2022 15:23

Mistakes happen. In a new build house, there are thousands of elements and tasks that could go wrong. It's completely understandable that some do.

I've just been in hospital and the majority of my care was excellent. There was an issue with my meds on the first night that was quite significant, but honestly if it wasn't me it could have been someone else and mattered more.

Stuff happens.

I don't understand the judgement about human error or differences of opinion.

I object hugely to systematic failings.

GoldenCupidon · 08/11/2022 15:26

Slagging off entire professions just shows that the person who is doing it lacks compassion and imagination.

On the other hand things like "the police have a problem with racism" etc I wouldn't see in the same way, as clearly they are criticising the culture and the worst of your colleagues rather than every single member of the police service.

"I've never met a nice GP receptionist" is also a matter of opinion/experience although like a PP I would question whether the poster has really bad luck or is actually difficult/a PITA themselves.

I met two lovely GP receptionists yesterday btw, if you are one!

NCFT0922 · 08/11/2022 15:32

@PollyAmour you sound like a lovely nurse!

Mayorquimby2 · 08/11/2022 15:38

The threads on criminal barristers are always eye opening.

"Can you believe he called the victim a liar just because his client instructed him that the victim was lying??? They should be ashamed, how can they sleep at night??? Scumbag"

As though they'd genuinely prefer to bin off the legal system

hesbeingabitofadick · 08/11/2022 15:40

teacher, gp, gp receptionist, health visitor, police , social worker, nurse, midwife

Blimey. You're a busy bee! How do you fit it all in?

Trisolaris · 08/11/2022 15:43

I work in HR. Pretty much universally hated on mumsnet

Dinneronmybfpillow · 08/11/2022 15:46

I'm a mental health nurse... I mostly hold back but every now and then I add my views and swiftly name change after. Thank fuck I don't work for CAMHS, it's even worse for them than us in adults.

DarkKarmaIlama · 08/11/2022 16:00

@Dinneronmybfpillow

ahh, don’t name change. I love MH nurses, despite them all being bat shit crazy themselves 😜.

PotentiallyPolly · 08/11/2022 16:04

Someone can be highly critical of a profession without having a super cool one themselves. I think health visitors should be discontinued, I’ve had 3 kids and still not met one that has a clue what they’re talking about. Many give outright dangerous advice and live to make new mums feel like they’re fucking up. They’re a waste of NHS money and resources. I’m more than entitled to that opinion even if I am a mere bookkeeper Hmm
