Do you want compulsory ID cards?

I just saw this on YouGov and haven’t given it much thought.

My initial feeling is it’ll be costly and how do you implement it so it reaches all types of work (eg actually stamps out what it is meant to)

But other than that not sure, I haven’t looked into it much yet. What do you think?

For the vote:

yabu - no to ID cards

yanbu - yes go for it

Previously, I'd have said 'no' to ID cards.

However, the Tory govt's ongoing assault on the disadvantaged is likely to mean photographic proof to allow us to vote. The seriously disadvantaged / disenfranchised tend to not have driving licenses and/or passports.

In terms of cutting out whatever they believe issuing ID cards would cut out, it probably won't work because the criminal fraternity will always find some way around any scheme and/or barrier.

Now, I'm thinking to allow democracy to function fairly we probably need something like this - although it goes against my natural grain.

If they're literally a piece of paper, then maybe. Not with biometric scanning and tracking etc.

The argument for needing proof to vote is non existent though, there's a vanishingly small amount of voter fraud. The democratic system is much more threatened by fake news and disinformation, if you ask me. This is a great wheeze to keep labour voters out of the voting booths.

If we were going for ID, we should have a compulsory voting system like in Australia. You have to register to vote and you have to vote. It increases participation massively.
