Think the dog is dying

My friends have gone on holiday, they asked if I could take care of their jack Russel.
He is a 15 year old male, he is so skinny:(
He is under weight by 2 kg , all ribs on show etc.
He does not want to eat the food provoded by my friends, I believe its due to his teeth hurting and the food being too hard to chew for him.
I asked my friends if I could give him different food , they approved.
The dog is being fed by me and is eating fine so far.
The issue is that he is urinatimg everywhere, he urinates every 30 minutes around the house, I have put him in the kitchen because there are tiles so easier to clean , I let him out in the garden every hour, but it does not help .
He urinates everywhere and on his bed too.
I think he is very, very unwell.
He does not look happy at all.
My friends have been informed of the issue and said he is having some issues with his bladder for the last 2 months.
I was not told this , I domt think I would have said yes in the first place considering I have a crawler at home and a toddler:(
I realy feel sorry for the dog, I feel I should take him to the vets , my friends said they do not have an insurance and wont be able to cover the costs for the treatment needed.
He is suffering, not a happy dog , just lies amd urinates around himself.
I cant afford to pay for the treatment myself.
I suspect he may have a bladder cancer.
I decided to just take him to the vets and pay by my credit card because I cant stand him suffering.
The appointment is in the evening.
I have asked my friends what if the vet will advise to put him down, they said they are ok with it but cant afford to cover the fees !
I am ready to cover the fees myself but I dont know how much its going to be and I am so angry and stressed about this whole thing, the poor dog :((((
AIBU to cover the fees for the vets to end his suffering ?

I know my friends will no longer be my friends .cruel

Just to add - the posters who are saying it’s a crime / illegal for the owners not to take it to the vet are incorrect. Look it up.

Read Animal Welfare Act 2006
Section 4 - unnecessary suffering.
Surely leaving a dog unable to eat properly, thin and incontinent would be covered by Section 4?

They found the money for the holiday, didn't they? Bastards.

this 👆🏻. Sounds like they've given up on the dog now he's old.

Adultchildofelderlyparents · 08/11/2022 18:00

I think your friends know exactly what state their dog is in, they know exactly what his health issues are, they know it's time for him to be put to rest and would rather spend money on a holiday themselves that pay for that poor dog to be comfortable. And I suspect they know that you are a caring sort of person who will want to make sure the dog is cared for in the way it needs.
Poor dog, poor you having to deal with this situation. At least the dog will end it's life with someone who cares for it.

This
They are shit owners. Poor dog.

ladydimitrescu · 08/11/2022 18:08

Take him but don't pay! Give them your friends details and they can sort it when home - absolutely not down to you. Well done you for actually giving a damn about the poor thing. Flowers

CrimsonThunder · 08/11/2022 18:12

@Storyofalion - what did the vets say?
Hope the little dog is ok x

Whiskeypowers · 08/11/2022 18:19

That’s so sad
at least you care about him the poor little chap

BlueDuckBlue · 08/11/2022 19:14

That poor dog x

What did the vet say ?

Blondewithredlips · 08/11/2022 21:06

Op please update when you can.

stayathomer · 08/11/2022 23:46

The only thing I’d say is maybe they paid for the holiday but their dog is worse because they’re not there? Our dog when I was a child didn’t eat when we put him in kennels for the first few days. The dog might be pining and perhaps the owners meant that at this moment they don’t have that money which yes unfortunately happens (I am waiting for pay day myself). Maybe they are terrible but just there’s a lot jumping on them with only one side to the story

PinkSyCo · 08/11/2022 23:52

Wow if that was my dog I’d be on the first flight back home. Your friends are nasty, callous cunts. Do what you have to do for that poor dog and tell the vet to send the bill to your friends.Do not let them get away with cheeky fuckery as well as animal cruelty.

The op clearly states the dog is underweight, with its ribs showing, and that it’s been having bladder issues for (at least) 2 months prior to it coming to her. I think that’s enough info to jump to a conclusion about their priorities I’m life if they have afforded a holiday but can’t afford vet treatment (as they told op). If you have a pet you don’t neglect getting it treatment when it’s clearly unwell.

How did it go op? I hope they have helped the poor thing out.

Sheitgeist · 09/11/2022 08:47

Haven't RTFT but my god your OP made me so angry. What selfish, reprehensible twats your friends are, OP. Poor doggo. How lucky he is now that someone lovely like you is taking care of him.
Vet's bills are expensive, though... I would very much be demanding reimbursement from these 'friends' for any financial outlay you make. Selfish c*nts.

Seaweedandsalt · 09/11/2022 08:58

Any update OP?

Causing unnecessary suffering-
That is a-prosecutable action.
A man was prosecuted for killing a grey squirrel by shooting it many times rather than cleanly .
And a Grey Squirrel is a “ Pest” species.

A Dog left to suffer is surely illegal.

Seaweedandsalt · 15/11/2022 10:40

Was there ever an update to this story? Frustrating when you don't get to know what happened!!
