That money will go towards vital research that will improve the lives of women living with cancer. Deborah James pushed the conversation around cancer and broke down taboos and will of helped countless people get the support they needed.

OP posts:

Surely a TAAT.

Yeah it's fantastic but I don't really understand the point of the thread either.

No idea of the purpose of this thread either.

FirewomanSam · 08/11/2022 15:07

I saw the thread you’re obviously responding to and thought it was really horrible. She should have just got on with it and died quietly, apparently. YANBU.

MissyB1 · 08/11/2022 15:09

For those saying they don’t understand, try reading the posts, there aren’t that many so far!! It’s been explained at least twice!

OP I totally agree with you. If she had done what some mumsnet members thought she should have done i.e. shut up and died quietly, that’s a lot of money for cancer research that wouldn’t have been raised.

DrManhattan · 08/11/2022 15:10

Thanks.. I think

MistressoftheDarkSide · 08/11/2022 15:12

Why is no one asking the question “Why do high profile cancer sufferers have to raise money and awareness of their conditions rather than the powers that be doing more about something that is likely to affect 50% of the population born since 1960 and could legitimately be regarded as a health crisis of massive proportions?”

applecartsonthehill · 08/11/2022 15:16

It's just a TAAT having read. Not sure of the point of OP's thread.

Stichintime · 08/11/2022 15:20

Who?

memyselfi · 08/11/2022 15:27

I'm not familiar with her either , I don't watch TV but I get the gist.
The thing is the thread you're having a dig at shouldn't have been deleted imo. People are perfectly entitled to hold those view points , no one was disrespectful.
So yes YABU and sanctimonious with it.

RobertaFirmino · 08/11/2022 15:27

It doesn't matter if DJ raised 20 million. The fact is that some people find the 'cancer in your face' approach upsetting because they or a loved one have had cancer themselves.

Their feelings are valid too.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 08/11/2022 15:29

Actually I’ll answer my own question.

Fact is that our modern life with all its shiny baubles, progress and convenience comes with a side dish of chemicals and poisons that are considered “safe” at certain levels in each case. However, the cumulative affect may be far more impactful than we realise.

Environmentally, since the first atomic weapons were used in WW2, there have been over 3000 tests of similar weapons both above and below ground. Every such detonation releases waste into the environment. Oh, but it’s all done safely is it? Then why does everyone lose their mind when nuclear accidents happen such as Chernobyl and Fukushima?

Currently in London, there is a March going on orchestrated by LabRats, the unofficial branch of the Nuclear Test Veterans Association. I would like to be there because my Dad is a nuclear test veteran. He was part of the now defunct class action seeking compensation for being used as a Guinea pig while serving in the navy at Maralinga - he lives with splenic lymphoma, very rare.

It maddens me that governments and corporations have evidence that profiteering over public health in this particular area is hugely detrimental yet it is denied, covered up and it is left to celebrities and private individuals to try and campaign for public awareness and funding, while they are suffering an appalling illness.

For the record, I do admire those who campaign and raise funds etc, but I don’t think they should have to.

I could have sworn a read a deletion message saying ' not in the spirit of ..'
Anyway my point is the same.

I guess the amount of money raised for cancer research doesn’t matter to some people - well until they want to benefit from that research of course…..

ChnandlerBong · 08/11/2022 15:43

OP why do you personally feel the need to remind anyone of anything? She was amazing but no more amazing than my friend who is facing a similar diagnosis. Just because my friend isn't making podcasts and raising millions (she's raising 2 amazing kids and running half marathons for charity) doesn't mean she's any less amazing.

The point was some mumsnetters think people like DJ are annoying attention seekers, and are offending others who don’t want to know about cancer. Op is reminding us why DJ was doing a good thing.

I didn’t make a big deal, or do lots of fund raising when I had cancer. But just because that wasn’t for me doesn’t mean I don’t bloody admire the people who have the confidence and motivation to do so.

Agree. Why the need to remind us OP?

Post on the originating thread rather than create a pointless TAAT

Say there was a MNer who had had two immediate family members die a hideous death from cancer and she was finding things very, very hard. Seeing someone else dying from cancer in a very public manner was making things much worse for her, like a constant reminder.

Are you really telling me this woman's feelings are not valid?

They are no more valid than that of the person with cancer surely? 🤷‍♀️ And as Op quite rightly points out, DJ was doing a valuable thing - raising millions for much needed research.

Fireballxl5 · 08/11/2022 16:05

I’d like to remind everyone that when Jade Goody was diagnosed with cervical cancer pap tests rose in the UK by 12% after previously declining since 2002.

It's about raising awareness and if celebrities want to do so that’s their choice, I didn’t know Paul Ritter was ill until he died so I guess he wished to keep his illness private.

DarkKarmaIlama · 08/11/2022 16:15

She was an admirable lady for sure.

I am sick of hearing about cancer research though. As far as I am concerned there will never be a cure. Very unlikely.

DarkKarmaIlama · 08/11/2022 16:17

@Fireballxl5

So it takes for someone in the public eye to die in order for some women to take responsibility for their Health? The rates are down again for smears. Perhaps someone needs to die again.

Thats not awareness it’s just women being ignorant about their health.

She didn't raise money for women living with cancer. She raised money for bowel cancer research which affects both men and women. This is important.

caringcarer · 08/11/2022 16:43

I think Deborah's real legacy is in raising awareness. Now more people are aware of early symptoms so get checked out sooner.

A580Hojas · 08/11/2022 16:49

This is a taat and a ridiculously pompous one at that.
