Baby's eczema

I can't seem to get my baby daughters eczema under control. It flared up badly about 6 weeks ago when her whole body came out in an angry red rash. She was itchy and distressed so we saw the GP straight away and she was prescribed steroid cream. This helped reduce the redness but it's left lots of dry skin. Despite moisturising daily (I use e45 but have tried other brands - some of which made it worse such as Aveeno) the dry skin just isn't shifting. Occasionally it will go red again which is brought down by the steroid cream but she constantly feels dry and scaly.

She has CMPA so we are being careful on what to wean her on. So far she's only had fruits and veg so things I wouldn't expect to cause an allergic reaction. I haven't changed my washing powder and I can't think what else could be causing this.

Any advice or remedy ideas would be appreciated. Thank you.

Oats in the water bath are very moisturising. Also coconut oil on wet/damp skin and then dab with the towel, it locks moisture in. It is prime time for dust allergy as well, with central heating on and windows open less, can you try to make her environment, especially the sleeping one, as dust free as possible, dust inside the radiator as well (total pain, I know). Good luck, my son had eczema as a baby, it's horrible, he mostly grew out of it but it still flares up occasionally.

Oh and no clothes conditioner and double rinse

You have to apply emollient more than you think. I would be aiming for 4-5x a day.

Emollient as in moisturiser cream? I do have a prescription emollient for the bath too

Hi, I'm not sure how or where to make a new post on here! My son was diagnosed with eczema when he was 3 months old, this is how his skin flares, but its always bothered me that it looks more like a rash than dry eczema, even when his skin is soft it doesn't clear this...it just goes up and down. Does anyone have any idea if this is common for eczema or if it could he something else? We are under dermatology who have seen him once and just prescribed steroids but it looked more red and scaley when they seen it, they haven't seen it at this stage. It's also really bad on his cheeks and chin currently and these little spots start to weep clear fluid. Any advice would he hugely appreciated its all so stressful! Thanks in advance.

Could it be allergy rash? I'm not sure how to differentiate between that and eczema to be honest

My 7 month old has eczema and I searched high and low for a non steroid option. He is prescribed diprobase which did absolutely nothing.
I found balmonds bath and body oil works wonders. You can get it from Holland and Barrats. I give him a bath in it and then massage with it and then top up with Aveeno dermexa. His skin is 1000 times better.
Sometimes I just massage without the bath as he is a wriggler and does not sit still in the tub. Too much stress trying to keep him from drowning himself. Haha.

I second the advice on upping the application of emollient (moisturiser). Morning and night and in between as necessary.

It may be different for babies, but advice for adults with eczema is to pick the most moisturising option depending on what's practical for your circumstances: thick greasy ointment is best, cream is second best, lotion is third best.

Here is a video on YouTube about applying emollient to young kids with eczema. Hopefully it helps.

Use vaseline

Luna26 · 18/11/2022 12:58

Thank you! I already use balmonds ointment and daily cream so I will try the oil also :)

Luna26 · 18/11/2022 13:00

I have used emollient know him since he was 1 month old but nothing seems to help, I apply cream then ointment on top atleast 5 times a day then twice through the night and always have. We are being trialed on neocate formula incase it's a cows milk allergy as he's also always had reflux and constipation, thank you for replying :)

Hey Luna, I hope you found what works for your little one☺️.

Did you ever get to the bottom of this? My LB is exactly the same but the flare ups are getting worse but when it’s calm it’s there.. constantly?

Hopefully someone has some pointers although I know this thread is old.

OP it might be a secondary bacterial infection on the eczema. This happened to my baby and it took a specialist to diagnose. Cleared within one week with antibiotics. Please Google secondary infection eczema and have a look to see if the pictures look like what your baby has. Also if you use cream serum a tub every time you touch the eczema, then the cream you are spreading more bacteria.
