To think getting nails done all the time is a waste of money

Had my nails done 4 times in my life all for special occasions. Just had them done for my wedding. I always have to have them taken off though after 2 weeks as I can't stand my nails being long. I think for a special occasion its ok getting gel nails but at 25 quid a pop isn't it a waste of money to have them done all the time? The nail people in the shop seemed to think I was bonkers for wanting them taken off and nothing new done. I was so happy to get home chop them file them and put a clear polish on. Most women would be sad to not have posh nails but I was happy to have my short nails back. Only had them done for my wedding so I wouldn't have to worry about chipping. With the cost of living is it justified to spend this amount of money every 2 weeks. I know we have to treat ourselves but I think there's better things to spend money on.

My gel polish lasts 3 weeks, I get my eyebrows done at the same time, my highlights are refreshed every 6 weeks, I go for a blow dry every week…. It’s fuck all to do with you what people spend their cash on ☺️ HTH

May I ask what that costs (roughly) to do? I’d love to be able to get my hair and nails done regularly but it costs a fortune (am in London). Might be moving away in a few years and am wondering if I might then finally be to afford to actually look and feel nice!

It’s all relative based on your interests isn’t it? Someone who doesn’t like cycling could argue spending £100s/1000s on bikes and gear is a waste of money. Or a non drinker might think it’s a waste of money for people to spend their Friday nights in the pub. There are probably people who think your particular interests/likes aren’t worth your money, either.

Precisely this! Self care is one of my hobbies so I like to to spend money on taking care of myself. I make good money and can afford it so why not?

BirdyWoof · 08/11/2022 00:17

I love having my nails done (long acrylics especially) but unfortunately my job is too hands on and after about 5 split nails over the course of several years which were agonising to grow out, I had to accept defeat.

Nothing is a waste of money if it brings you happiness. Same goes for tattoos, hair dye, other beauty treatments, etc.

I’m sure there’s things you enjoy that would bore the absolute balls off me, but there’s no need to shit on someone else’s joy, is there?

Hibernationsetting · 08/11/2022 00:21

@MotherOfPuffling

mine are £35 a set, and then £25 infill and re paint. They last me 4, occasionally 5 weeks.

TikNeres · 08/11/2022 00:23

I don't like 'done' nails. I like plain, clean, short natural nails, which obviously saves me a fortune Grin

MotherOfPuffling · 08/11/2022 00:32

@Hibernationsetting see that kind of price I could justify - I must see if I can find anywhere near me that doesn’t charge a fortune.

Mosaic123 · 08/11/2022 00:42

I have my hair cut and coloured every few weeks and think of it as an indulgence. I don't have my nails done but it's whatever floats your boat (as long as you can afford it).

PinkArt · 08/11/2022 00:52

It's a waste to you. It's not a waste to someone who enjoys getting their nails done! Just like I think paying to watch a football match is a waste, but it isn't to someone who loves watching sport. Horses for courses.

shivawn · 08/11/2022 00:56

It's not worth the money for me but depends how in to your nails you are I guess. I rarely notice other peoples nails either.

BreadInCaptivity · 08/11/2022 01:07

I've never had my nails done.

Don't understand why it's a priority for anyone to spend that kind of money when for me it's easy to file them into a nice shape and apply some clear/pale varnish to keep them looking nice.

That said, I spend £££ getting my hair highlighted and cut - annually far more than anyone could probably spend on their nails.

I'm sure there are plenty of people who could recommend me a cheaper salon or of a box dye and say it's comparable it's not.

Upshot is these things depend on what they are worth to you and in that respect each to their own but I will declare with steel pants on that I find long acrylic nails, especially stiletto ones really tacky.

mathanxiety · 08/11/2022 01:14

A lot of weddings are a waste of money too.

Kanaloa · 08/11/2022 01:18

Loads of stuff is a waste of money. It would be depressing if we only spend money on the absolute bare basics. Crisps? Waste of money. Cinema? Waste of money. New shoes? No way if you already own one pair.

Primafacieloco · 08/11/2022 01:22

I do my own gel nails at home about every 3 weeks. I had them done at a salon just once, paid nearly £40 for a simple gel polish and never again! The whole kit including lamp, gels, preparation and care kit plus an electric nail file cost me roughly £150 but I've had it for over a year and still plenty left for another good couple of months! I don't do anything fancy (can't be arsed, also got zero talent or patience lol) just plain polish, mostly neutrals as I find them really low maintenance.

Nat6999 · 08/11/2022 01:48

I used to get mine done every 3 weeks before I became housebound, it was my treat. Now I do them myself at home either using the dipping method or by using UV gel.

palygold · 08/11/2022 01:50

A waste of time as well as money. I used to have a monthly manicure and pedicure but it was time consuming with the appointments and wasn't relaxing as the beautician wanted to talk constantly, and I was too polite to say I'd rather read my magazine.

There's a natural nails thread on S and B with lots of nicely manicured nails. Might be worth a look

"Not like other girls"

Flippettyflip · 08/11/2022 01:53

YANBU. I never have my nails done, polish makes me feel claustrophobic!

NiceTwin · 08/11/2022 01:53

YABU to suggest that most women would be sad if they didn't have posh nails.
There are heaps of women who don't have posh nails and heaps of them probably don't give it a second thought.

LadyOfTheFliessssss · 08/11/2022 01:57

I'd get a professional one if I had the free money. Why not?

I wouldn't have long fake ones though.

I do have a UV lamp though, so I do glitter gel ones at home. I'd recommend getting one and you can't make too much of us a mess with a glitter polish.

They just peel off after a soak in water so they're no trouble.

sashh · 08/11/2022 02:19

Getting my nails done is my one luxury.

My psoriasis can make my nails flake so I have gels. I keep my nails short, you don't have to have them long.

It’s not really any of your business what other people spend their money on though, is it?

This is so weird to me. You can’t understand why it’s a priority for someone to spend money on their nails but you get your hair done. I pay less than £30 a month for my nails but pay over £100 on my hair every 8-10 weeks, my nails are alot cheaper than my hair 😅

The same way to you box dye isn’t comparable (I agree btw, it isn’t and it’s awful for your hair) neither are nails done at home to me. I have short stubby fingers and nails grow super flimsy no matter what I try, on top that I can’t paint my nails to save my life, even my good hand looks like a toddler went to town on it.

Olivetreebutter · 08/11/2022 02:57

I love having my nails done. I rarely do my hair - every 6 months or so - and don't have any other beauty treatments apart from hair removal. But shellac nails I really love. I don't have them long. Normal paint is pointless as I chip them immediately and I can't paint them myself as I just make a mess.
I'd love to have them redone every month and might try to treat myself now I've had a pay rise, but I've had to put off having them done for a while as I've splurged on a course of underarm laser hair removal.

Mummieslncorporated · 08/11/2022 05:54

'most women would be sad'.. really? Most women I know are like me, and rarely if ever have 'posh nails'. I don't think it makes any of us sad.

Shoxfordian · 08/11/2022 06:05

Yabu op because not everyone is like you or has the same priorities. I get my acrylics done every 3-4 weeks; not a waste of money to me because I like how they look after
