What did we see this afternoon?

I have name changed as my other threads had medical things on them and this is completely identifying. I was driving from radstock towards Burlington Combe today at about 4.15 when we were going through some woods (marked with arrow on the map). Something ran ibfront of the car. I say ran but it almost stumbled/tumbled across the road from left to right. I only saw it in the road but my 17 year old Dd saw it then run up the bank in the trees on the right. We have no idea what we saw and the way it moved at first made me think it was a big sycamore leaf but as my DD saw it climb the bank this has been discounted. We have looked at endless photos of British wildlife etc but can't place it. The description is that is was a sandy/pale yellow colour (hence the leaf thought) it was bigger than a hedgehog or a rat but smaller than a hare. It was fast as it past the road between the car in front and mine and then climbed the bank. What on earth could it be?! It is made all the weirder because I saw a creature further along that road a couple of months ago that I can't work out either. Slightly cat like but much bigger and black, this time it was early morning and my Dd was asleep and doesn't believe me. My Dds only solution is that we keep passing through a magical wood (grasping at straws)

I'm only here for the bison jokes 😂

Xiaoxiong · 07/11/2022 21:27

I came to say muntjac too - one ran in front of my car the other day and all you're left with is the impression of something round and very fast!

TortillaChipAddict · 07/11/2022 21:27

I vote Guinea pig. They can move fast, resemble rabbits but walk nothing like them. You can get pretty large ones - I had one that was 1.5kg once, he was an agouti, a Guinea pig breed which tend to grow larger than others, and the sandy colour you describe would be explains if agouti too

sheepandcaravan · 07/11/2022 21:27

A wild haggis

Cucumberbund · 07/11/2022 21:28

Bank vole and/or polecat without its black guard hairs.

Mamarsupial · 07/11/2022 21:29

I don’t understand how you can think something the size and shape and speed of a blowing sycamore leaf could be a small bison? Or am I missing a joke?

It could have been an escaped hamster?

Orrrrr - it could have been a leaf. A different creature climbed up the bank and your daughter mistakenly thought it was the leaf!

ScabbersChin · 07/11/2022 21:29

Sure t wasn’t Pikachu?

PortalooSunset · 07/11/2022 21:30

Escaped guinea pig?

heldinadream · 07/11/2022 21:30

Votes for guinea pig are mounting up...

QuebecBagnet · 07/11/2022 21:30

Someone has beaten me to saying bison! 🦬

ShinyPikachu · 07/11/2022 21:31

I came here to say a lost haggis and see I was beaten to it.

My other thought was maybe a quail?

OP, get a dashcam so you can share photos with us the next time you have a weird sighting. Grin

BobinogBobbleHat · 07/11/2022 21:31

This is my home turf. I reckon Muntjac, or wild rabbit. I know you said it didn't hop, but a rabbit going full pelt doesn't hop at all, they go like the clappers.

Too far south for haggis, and they haven't emerged for the season yet anyway.

I feel I've missed something excellent re. bison.

Mada1985 · 07/11/2022 21:32

Baby boar or muntjac

PrincessofWellies · 07/11/2022 21:32

Small muntjac?

ZandathePanda · 07/11/2022 21:32

Grouse

Undertheoldlindentree · 07/11/2022 21:32

Tiny muntjac deer?

PerkingFaintly · 07/11/2022 21:32

A fleeing rabbit doesn't hop.

I once saw one burst through a hedge like it had been fired from a gun. A few moments later appeared the neighbour's fit young gundog, going at a bit of lick but still... never gonna catch it.

I know what it is

It's a very rare animal

Only seen in Scotland

In the Highlands

It's a

Haggis!

They are small , round , brownish , have a stumbling walk , cos legs on one side are shorter that the other side and the are great at climbing hills

Go on who's going to say I am wrong ? 😆

Ahh @sheepandcaravan you agree with me, sp good to know I am not the only one that knows this is what @whatwasthiscritter saw

What did we see this afternoon?
gogohmm · 07/11/2022 21:34

No idea but I need to drive that road on Wednesday, I'll have my dashcam on!

gogohmm · 07/11/2022 21:35

@BEAM123

Sounds like a muntjac

Oysterbabe · 07/11/2022 21:38

Weasels are weasily recognised. Stoats are stoatally different.

😂

QuebecBagnet · 07/11/2022 21:41

I think it could be a sponge. They’re very similar to Haggis and live in hedgerows. Yellow colour sounds about right.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 07/11/2022 21:42

A rare feral tofu.

Fink · 07/11/2022 21:44

Wild boar piglet, they're a stripy brown colour but you sometimes get much paler, sandy ones. They're always stripy though. About the right size and shape. And they can move fast when they want to.
