To think wrapping paper is a waste of money?

Every year I wrap all the presents and I think “this is just going straight in the bin. May as well chuck the money in the bin”

Yet, every year I still stupidly spend hours wrapping gifts.

Personally I find it very joyful to wrap with something that costs the planet less. Maybe you would too?

Good for you. Give yourself a well deserved pat on the back.

BosaNova · 10/11/2022 18:59

We are all doing our bit for environment. Just some of us don't get all up on a horse about it😁

silverclock222 · 10/11/2022 19:05

Pretty glossy shiny paper and ribbons is a must for Christmas Presents in our family - bonus points for glittery paper too.

Always4Brenner · 10/11/2022 19:05

I stopped wrapping a few years ago do to arthritis used gift bags instead. Will do the same this year.

That's really understandable! And smart. Some gift bags are lovely! And people usually keep them for next time. We have a drawer for these things😁

Brown paper on a roll and gardening string.

If I receive a present with ribbons, I save them and re-use.

Completely agree, we do the same. They can look so lovely when it's brown paper against a pretty ribbon. I save other things like little bells and bits of artificial foliage that's fallen off wreaths. I'm like a bloody magpie.

HuggsBosom · 10/11/2022 19:22

Surely it’s time to ban foil and glitter wrapping paper and only sell recyclable wrapping paper and gift bags.

BasiliskStare · 10/11/2022 19:33

@BagOfBollocks Me too - I get all the wrapping paper from any presents and fold it up ready for next year. I am channelling my Granny who used to smooth out all the wrapping paper after presents opened. Not sure she was thinking about the planet - more she was of the war generation - waste no want no . So I have learnt at her knee :) @MothBat and @rosesandferns Also use brown paper from parcels . I reuse any gift wrapping at all but then I do like a present to be wrapped. This Christmas we are are year 3 of some wrapping paper and have saved a whole load of brown paper from deliveries which can look lovely with string and a sprig of holly attached.

I think we probably all agree that in a land devoid of bidets that loo roll is of significantly more importance than wrapping paper.

DripDripDripSugar · 11/11/2022 07:58

Just give them their gifts in the original carrier bags. To make it more special sellotape down the top so there’s still an element of unwrapping. Concerned about plastic waste? Use the biodegradable ones from Co-op.

KirstenBlest · 11/11/2022 08:00

@tunthebloodyalarmoff , comparing gift wrap to toilet paper is ridiculous.
Use newspaper for both and do your bit for the planet

Surely it's time to ban the things that actually harm the planet, not little things for ordinary people....
Like, I dunno. Private jets, single use nappies, more than 2 kids, plastic grass, using more than 10kwh electricity a day and so on.

Nah. It's wrapping paper which is the issue😂

Thank you I work around my arthritis so this is a nice way to give gifts without me having pain.

ChocolateCakeYum · 11/11/2022 10:10

My parents did carrier bags for wrapping. It was soulless and actually very hard to unwrap (though that might be down to the amount of cellotape they used).

We use recyclable wrapping paper. It’s a bit more expensive but not by much.

Alternatively - do all of them. Small things count if enough people do them.

The UK uses approximately 300,000 tonnes of card packaging (and material) during the festive period – enough to cover Big Ben 260,000 times. Similarly, the amount of plastic packaging sent to landfill equates to 114,000 tonnes (the weight of 650,000 reindeer). And a typical UK household generates three and a half black bags of festive packaging each Christmas.

alphasox · 12/11/2022 10:40

I also use and reuse and reuse gift boxes and bags. Can’t stand wrapping and even with recycling hate the waste. This works for us so people still get the “opening” experience.

That’s great you do the other things. No reason not to add one more!
