Told I had job in interview

Hi just looking for some advice, I was told in the interview that I had the job when I explained that I would need to set days for childcare reasons, it didn't seem like a problem to the person who was interviewing me she said she would just need to go through things with her manager but that I had the job and that someone would contact me today. Well The manager has contacted me and has now told me that It would be really difficult to work around my availability but is able to give me a seasonal position where they send me shifts and I pick up when and if I can( I can't pick up any shifts unless I put my little one on to Nursery as I have no help) and they knew that. I Feel so disheartened as I'm desperate for work as I am really struggling and I feel really disheartened that It was made out that I had the job and now they're saying I don't, I want to tell them how I feel but don't want to come across rude of ungrateful as they did offer me an alternative.
Would you see anything or would you just leave it at that?

I doubt it will achieve much to be honest - I imagine the standard HR response will be that they are sorry if the interviewing panel led you to believe you had been unconditionally offered the role with the terms you requested guaranteed but that they should have been more clear that the final decision rested elsewhere. That the interviewers said they would need to confirm with management was an indication that they weren’t in charge of decision making. There’s nothing to lose in expressing your disappointment, but ultimately you can never assume you have a job offer until it’s formally made.

That’s really rubbish, so sorry to hear that.

If you need nursery then you need a 9-5, Mon-Fri sort of job yes? Was this not that kind of job?

In future, never mention any special requests until you are formally offered the job. You are in a much better position to negotiate once they are all excited about you and are hoping you accept.

Oh how upsetting for you. Use it as a learning experience and only state terms and conditions once you have the job offer in writing and have accepted it. The interviewer obviously went to her manager who said no.

Maybe pick up a few shifts and get to know the manager? Prove yourself to be an exemplary employee and see if you can negotiate a contracted position.

What sector is the job in?

@ashapushapush thank you for your reply🙂
Before I went for my interview they asked me over email my special requirements for shifts I told them and they still offered me an interview and then again when I went for my interview they had a piece of paper and wanted me to write down my availability and I thought nothing of it but I'll know for next time not to do that.

I experienced something like this a few weeks ago. Went for an interview with a panel of three which lasted about 90 mins. The most senior person (the director of the dept.) and I had tremendous rapport and soon he was asking me when I could start, whether I drove as he could reserve a parking space for me, etc, and going over ideas for projects that could utilise my previous experience that we could work on together. In the last 15 minutes of the interview, in walks the person who would have been managing me: Early 30s and I'm 55 and in a instant from the way she looked at me, I knew I wasn't going to get the job. She apologised for being late, asked me a few questions in a disinterested manner and was the first out the door when the interview finished. I even stayed on for another 10 minutes chatting to the person from HR.

A few days later I had an email saying I was the reserve candidate and a few hours later that I hadn't got the job.

I think you have to let these frustrations go and move onto the next job application...
