Leaving my job but can't resign yet. Not fair on my team?

We've just submitted a bit report at work. Colleagues have no idea that I have found a new job and will be resigning. Haven't passed the vetting for new job yet and do not want to hand in my notice until I have the contract. I'm 100% sure I will pass vetting.

As we've just published our report, all the new projects are being assigned to different people. I feel like by going along with this and allowing them to assign things to me, as well as taking responsibility for certain aspects of the role which they want to train me up for and requires them booking expensive training, I am wasting their time and resources.

If I tell them I'm leaving as a good will gesture they could demand my notice and I could be left with a gap in employment which I cannot afford.

Feel really awful about it all and not sure how to manage the situation. Any advice? Feels really wrong....

Your vetting could take months, just press on with your current job as best you can and prepare an excellent handover. People change jobs all the time, there's nothing to feel guilty about.

It's standard. You just carry on as if you haven't got a new job until you have confirmation that you have a new job and a start date.

Do nothing until new contract is signed

BAU until you have a signed contract and a start date. The plug can be pulled at any point

It won't take months as a lot of it is transferable from my previous role. They think 6 weeks which leaves me with another 3 weeks to go, at which point a lot of my training at my current role will be booked a lot of the training. It just feels so awkward when they're booking hotel stays for me for training I know I won't be able to attend. Feels really wrong!

Definitely just wait it out. Surely any training etc arranged can just be used for the new person who takes on those roles. Having said that I would check what your current contract says about any training costs, I doubt there's anything written in about recouping costs.

Whatever your notice period is, is the amount of time your work feel like it will take to replace you so don’t feel guilty.

ohlookaprettylight · 07/11/2022 12:38

Thanks everyone. I feel slightly less shit about it now. I'm so bad at lying I need to improve on my poker face rather than malfunctioning when asked what time I want my train ticket to be for.

Won't they find out anyway when they request references?

WishfulWanda · 07/11/2022 12:55

Don’t worry about it. Your work would make you redundant in a heartbeat and not think twice, you’re being too nice.
