To think we should remove the dummy

AIBU to think that we should remove the dummy sooner rather than later?

My DS is 15 months old and has a dummy for sleeping only, it stays in his cot. DH thinks that it makes him happy and it's doing no harm so he may as well keep it for now. I'm worried that as he gets older it'll be harder to remove - I've had friends really struggle with the transition to no dummy once the child is over 2.

When did others remove the dummy? Is DH right that as he's happy we should leave it for now?

At 12 months it moved to sleep time only. Took it away completely a few days after they turned 2. Had a couple of nights where they struggled to settle, but was fine after that.

I don’t think it’s any easier at 15 months than 2 to be honest. They argument really only works when they are so young they don’t understand the concept of suddenly not having something.
At 15 months he will have the awareness that he usually has a dummy for sleep and now it’s gone. Given that the dummy brings him comfort and helps him sleep in with your husband.
I think you’ve missed the boat on removing it before they know and it’ll be easier if you remove it when he can fully understand that he’s giving it up by choice and because he’s a big boy.

Agree that it's easier to wait until he understands. We removed it a sleep times and night times when he was about 2. 5 and he knew the dummy fairy was coming to take it but replace it with a remote control car as he was a big boy. Went really well.

Agree wait until he understands.
My child had his for sleep only until he was 3.
We have them to Santa to give to new babies.
He was chuffed with himself.

I found it easy enough to do once they were old enough to understand it was going and could be prepared for it

We did the same as you, kept it in the cot for naps only. At 2 years 3 months I chopped the teat off and told her it was broken and went cold Turkey, I allowed her to hold it in her hand for bed times and after a few days she dropped it down the back of the cot and that was that! Far easier than I expected it to be.

Looks like everyone agrees with DH. We will leave it til he's old enough to understand! Thanks all
