To regret leaving old job and hate new job within one week?

Both schools

I left as SMT were awful
Here SMT are nice - I made sure I felt comfortable at interview however all the other staff, teachers, TAs are very dismissive.
Nobody says anything in the staff room to me and on playground duty they just talk amongst themselves.

I feel I’ve made a terrible mistake

Hope it gets better for you. Do you get the impression maybe the others wanted someone else for the job?

FlashFash · 07/11/2022 10:10

Hi op

Not school example but I left my place of work where I had been for 7 years
Withing a month I knew the new place wasn't for me. I stuck it out for a year and then managed to go back to my old job

What I learned from this though is that there was a reason why I left in the first place, I am a year in from being back now and it's the same things happening now as prompted me to look elsewhere 2/3 years ago
I do wish I had given the new place more time, standoffish staff is one element and yes getting on with colleagues is important but what do you enjoy about the job? What made you leave the last role?

BadChoice1 · 07/11/2022 10:33

The last role was as a TA
SMT didn’t speak to TAs unless something bad to say so it was all very unnerving
Some teachers also unfriendly so every year i would be worried where I would end up and who with

This role is as a teacher but honestly - nobody talks to me, apart from SMT

I can’t think it would be that they wanted someone else for the job as there are 2 vacancies now!

I try and say good morning to everyone I see but honestly - nobody is interested

Schools are so full on and people are getting on with stuff the minute they are in. One week is no time at all. Keep an open mind for a term. By then you will know. Schools are not really like other places of work. You only see other adults without kids around for the odd tea break in the staff room so it takes longer to get to know people. The usual place you see other staff with time to talk, not involved with kids, is in after school/lunch time meetings. That is often where you get to know people a bit better. Don't decide what they are like just yet op.

Thankyou
All the staff at the old place in terms on teachers and TAs were so welcoming when I started, really grateful for everything I did

It was just SMT that were hideous and after being asked why I needed to go to my dads funeral by the head I decided to go for a new school and be a teacher instead so I didn’t have the constant worry of what teacher I would be paired with

just feeling very low about it all

It takes time to make connections/friends in a new work environment, and you will know yourself that this is the most stressful/busy time of the school year. First week back after half term, everyone is completely focused on their own thing. Give it time

Ohyoucutie · 07/11/2022 11:36

How long were you in old job?

Ohyoucutie · 07/11/2022 11:38

So in new job you are a teacher not at TA?

spaceshiptrain · 07/11/2022 12:33

I've found this in schools myself, cliquey and not friendly.
I would go for an agency and get some different roles instead of staying in the one role and then try to wangle my way into permanency from there.

BadChoice1 · 07/11/2022 12:36

4 years in old school

Yes im a qualified teacher but my children were young so I went for a TA position first

I can’t afford to rely on supply sadly

I am sure you will develop relationships with colleagues as time goes on. Plus new people will join. We

i think you need to give it time, it sounds like the old school was not a good place to work.

Ohyoucutie · 07/11/2022 12:42

and after being asked why I needed to go to my dads funeral by the head I decided to go for a new school

🤔

CointreauVersial · 07/11/2022 12:45

I think you need to give it time - this is true in ANY new job.

What would you say to a new pupil in your class who was having the same problems making friends?

Autumnleavesandhotchocolate · 07/11/2022 12:46

I did the same.
I'm not classed based, but am in a school. I sit and refresh the job page online throughout the day and eat lunch in my car. I get so cross with myself and what I gave up. It's horrible to think there's no way out. I can't afford to hand my notice in and I'm terrified to get another job in a rush incase I end up going from one crappy job to another. One short stay on the cv can be explained, multiples can't.
Sometimes I feel really, really depressed and in quite a bad place.
I really feel for you OP,

Angip3 · 07/11/2022 12:49

You need to give it longer than a week, they may not even realise your full time staff, they maybe assuming your agency, especially if there are 2 other vacancies, On the other hand its an odd time of year to be needing so many full time members of staff, there could be a reason for that, personally, id take good SMT over bad anyday, you have 2 potential new starters you can be welcoming to that can be your "newbies" group.

IHATEmyjob000 · 03/12/2022 22:41

how are you
