To wonder why some MNetters need their bed to be sterile.

Inspired by another thread (and by the general madness that is part and parcel of anything cleanliness-related on MN)…

Why are some people so determined that no (shudder) outdoor germs/nastiness gets anywhere near their bed? I mean, I can understand a basic level of care - not putting your outdoor shoes on the duvet, or your handbag on your pillow - but some people seemingly have to put on a full hazmat suit before sitting on the end of their own bed.

Now I understand wanting to keep it fresh, but why the fear of supposed germs that MNetters seem to think will be transferred to the bed? Why are these germs not scary on the sofa? Do people lick their beds, or perhaps want to keep open the option of performing surgery therein?

It’s pretty clear from other threads that it is mumsnet law to shower in the morning, so how much can it really matter if your bed isn’t totally sterile?!

I knew a woman who used to vacuum herself into bed. No marks on that carpet! What an awful way to live.
My dogs and one of the cats sleep on my bed so it must be totally gross.

Have you ever seen an episode of Dexter?

I watched all of Dexter and don't get the reference....

Although it's been a while in my defence.

I don't get having to wash everything to boiling point either.

My bedding is in the washer right now, on a quick wash.

I don't get a lot of these things posted either OP.

Sparklingbrook · 07/11/2022 09:04

I wash towels at 90 degrees and bed linen at 60. That works for me.

There is nothing anyone can say or do to convince others with poor hygiene standards. It’s usually lots of people with questionable hygiene agreeing with each other on threads like these.

So if you can't produce any sort of convincing argument in favour of your standards, doesn't that tell you something about them?

fedstool · 07/11/2022 09:14

A lot of them must have very unspontaneous sex lives!

MN rules of hygiene: Upon entering the house you should immediately strip off all clothing and put it into the washing machine. Then put on a fresh set of indoor clothes (also laundered daily). After that, you can get on with the daily hoovering, mopping, bleaching. Make sure to take your indoor clothes off before you have your pre-bed shower and put them straight into the washing machine. Do not enter your bedroom until you have thoroughly de-contaminated yourself. Put the towels immediately into the wash too, then put on a clean pair of knickers and fresh pyjamas over the top. Only then may you enter the sanctity of your clean sheets.

In the morning, strip off all the bedding and put in the wash with your now-sullied pyjamas before taking your morning shower to rinse off the grime of the night. Towels straight into the wash after of course. Put on a fresh set of outdoor clothes and off you go! Hopefully you have at least two washing machines so you can cope with the amount of laundry.

You forgot the shower you must have as soon as you get in from work.

I remember I looked at my bed once as I had stupidly forgotten to wear my blindfold and it suddenly became infested with maggots.

I was referring to how he covers every surface in cling film and plastic so no 'bodily fluids' get on to anything. Isn't that how sterile bed people have sex?

😂 Oh yes no splatter trace either.

I'm not sure how a quickie would work, perhaps they have a meticulously set up shag pad.

That's terrible, she must never feel settled.

I've been thinking recently about how one of the most damaging lessons my parents taught me is that me and my house need to look perfect at all times.

Why? It takes up so much time and money. Just a waste of life in so many dimensions.

Some people really seem to validate themselves by pointless cleanliness, and possibly think it makes them morally superior if they wash their towels every time they are used, and dust and mop the same surfaces several times a day. See also the thread on competitive window-opening. I do wonder how they reconcile their feeling of superiority with the fact that they are trashing the planet with overuse of chemicals and power consumption.

I don’t get why some people have showers in the morning and the evening, apart from the waste of water, I just couldn’t be bothered! I always wonder if they also was their hair while they shower or do they wear a shower cap to keep their hair dry? My hair looks a right mess if I wash it just before going to bed!

I don’t have a manual or “ dirty” job so a shower every other day suits me, no one says I smell anyway!

Sparklingbrook · 07/11/2022 13:39

I have a shower morning and evening. So a shower before work, then a shower after spending the day at work.
I don’t have a dirty job but it’s just nice after a long day to get all clean and ready for bed. I guess I can be bothered!
We have a shower that has a rail so you slide it up and down to get the right height. I tie my hair up and have the shower as low as it’ll go so it’s not above me.
It’s all good.

Vaccine001 · 07/11/2022 18:32

Showering twice a day is bad for skin if you're not really dirty aswell as obsessive cleanliness.

Is it? My skin is fine, I guess it depends what your putting in it in the shower. 🤔
