When New Labour was elected in 1997, Chancellor Gordon Brown explicitly stated that the economy, i.e. what they had inherited in fiscal terms, was in a very good state and he had no plans to change this.
Cue massive increases in public spending and selling off the UK's gold reserves.
Happy to be corrected on this, but is this not where the economic downturn started and the rise of dependency on benefits began?
Or, in very simplistic terms, if you inherit a sum of money and some assets, you spend them instead of conserving them or using them to promote future welfare?

Labour spending a shit load of money - lazy narrative again - I think you mean they invested in public services, tried to do something about economic inequity and support poorer families/communities - read the article posted above - the wild spending view is incorrect

Exasperatednow · 06/11/2022 21:16

Honestly threads like this exasperate me. Do you really think people are that stupid?

IT'S ALL CORBYN'S FAULT

This 😂

Subbaxeo · 06/11/2022 21:21

That’s a joke post right? People were dying in hospital corridors. School buildings were falling down. After Labour got in, they sorted out the mess. Brown wanted people to be able to live a decent life while working-hence tax credits. Similar to UC. He and Darling saved the banking system without which our economy would have collapsed-a crisis caused by US sun prime lending. Now look at Osborne- brought in austerity on a deflationary environment when he could have borrowed to maintain public services. Council income collapsed. Spiral spending decimated-east to do but we’re seeing the effects of it now. But yeah, all Brown’s fault.

Subbaxeo · 06/11/2022 21:22

Spiral=Capital sorry fat fingers!

Wasn't there a worldwide crash though started off by banks in Iceland? Can't remember the details but I'm pretty sure that was the main issue, not GB?

Don't let details facts like that get in the way of some Labour bashing...

How long can people go on blaming the last labour govt? This country is on its knees because of the tories!!

In the 90s people (Tories) used to go on about the Winter of Discontent.

All, The. Time.

The Tories been in power even longer than 12 years at the time.

Mosty labour lefties on these sites from what I see so I wouldn't even bother mentioning that. I suppose if it makes one person think.

Nevermind91 · 06/11/2022 21:30

It's a shame that the UK only seems to want either the Labour way or the Tory way, and flips from one to the other. Generally, Labour manage to spend every last penny accrued by the Tories, and then set about trying to find more ("The problem with socialism is you eventually run out of other people's money"). The Tories, on the other hand, usually manage to fill the vaults but don't do anything with it, so services suffer.
Obviously, it's not quite as black and white as that...financial crashes, pandemics, wars, etc..

If you can't get facts to support your view point resort to banal sweeping generalisations - all these tofu eating intellectuals out to get the poor little tories

Looks like Labour was much better than growth that the Consetvatives have ever been.

Oh and I wonder if people have forgotten that the Tories (Thatcher) sold off every asset we had and they got infinitely worse and cost us more. Just the NHS left to be sold now.
Selling of trains, water, gas...selling off council houses was the trigger for the housing boom and housing shortage...

Go on then. Tell us a fact.

I have voted Conservative in the past and think of myself as a centrist but given how far right the Conservatives have moved I think I look very left now.

Have you really got the nerve to scapegoat left-leaning voters after the shit show Truss just put on?!

For shame Hmm

@FelicityFlops Yes I fully agree, that people of this country should never forget....

PFI for building hospitals ect, that still to this day we are paying extortionate interest on that are still screwing over patients and hospitals.

The great swindle who can forget 🙄

PPI which Cameron embraced and made even more problematic - that PPI?

ghostyslovesheets · 06/11/2022 21:42

PFI even!

ZenNudist · 06/11/2022 21:43

It goes to show how little tory bots have got to trade on that they are still hammering on about that note.

Meanwhile we are all supposed to manage collective amnesia about the past 12 years.

HelloTreacle9 · 06/11/2022 21:43

Yep yep, all Gordo’s fault, everything that’s happened over the past TWELVE years. Enjoy warming your hands on the Tory Binfire Of Blame.

Worriedddd · 06/11/2022 21:43

It's the worldwide establishments fault really. They never let the economy properly reset after the 2007 crash instead they artificially propped it up with low interest rates and QE. Kicking the can down the road. Governments only think in the short term. This is a global issue well a western one by the way. A bad few events COVID , the war causing the house of cards to crumble. This will be a lot worse than 2007 they don't have QE as a back up plan.
