For thinking this is a bit of an own goal?

Firstly I know that the Swastika is an ancient symbol that was hijacked by evil. However it feels like a bit of an own goal by the Guardian to have it front and centre in the picture on this article about tattoo artists. AIBU?

Can’t help but think op was trying to goad some offensive comments.

Ekátn · 06/11/2022 20:00

This is like the outrage on tiktok when someone spotted the Isle of Man flag in someone’s video. And started calling them a Nazi.

StoneofDestiny · 06/11/2022 20:02

Because of its importance to Native Americans, the swastika also became important within the American Boy Scout movement as a symbol of nobility:

"… as you know from the account of the Swastika Thanks Badge which I have given to you in Scouting for Boys, the symbol was used in almost every part of the world in ancient days and therefore has various meanings given to it.

Anyway, whatever the origin was, the Swastika now stands for the badge of fellowship among Scouts all over the world, and when anyone has done a kindness to a Scout it is their privilege to present him or her with this token of their gratitude, which makes him a sort of member of the Brotherhood, and entitles him to the help of any other Scout at any time and at any place.

I want specially to remind Scouts to keep their eyes open and never fail to spot anyone wearing this badge.
It is their duty then to go up to such a person, make the scout sign, and ask if they can be of service to the wearer."

StoneofDestiny · 06/11/2022 20:03

Best get the badge correct and not approach the wrong person 😂

StoneofDestiny · 06/11/2022 20:03

For sure, these symbols are all over India with no Fascist connotations.

AnyFucker · 06/11/2022 20:05

That isn’t a swastika

StoneofDestiny · 06/11/2022 20:05

Besides - sincerely doubt anybody capable of having a Nazi Swastika tattooed on them would be reading The Guardian.

WeAreAllLionesses · 06/11/2022 20:05

So it's not offensive but you think The Guardian should have addressed it anyway?

Dear Reader, there is absolutely nothing to be offended by but just in case one random takes to Mumnset to say there could be, we'd like to address the issue?

🙄

The swastika is one of humankind's oldest known symbols.
It has the form of an equilateral cross with its arms bent at right angles, in either right-facing form or its left-facing mirror form. It is believed to have originally arose as a repeating design created by reed edges in the basket-weave designs of early Neolithic cultures around 11000 years ago, and has appeared in the motifs of many civilisations over the past 5000 years, representing perpetual motion (Ancient Greeks), law and order (Romans), the sun disk (ancient Egyptians and Bronze Age Europeans), the Christian cross and the Nordic thunder hammer.

Where did you get this information and the image from @StoneofDestiny ? I've never seen a Jewish Swastika...

Ekátn · 06/11/2022 20:07

I am guessing op is off to name change and/or try and remove the thread.

Kanaloa · 06/11/2022 20:09

I don’t if I’m being dumb but I can’t actually see it at all. Either way I don’t think what the swastika means TO YOU matters - by displaying it you’re also displaying either an ignorance or lack of care for what it means to almost everyone else. What does it cost you just to display something else if you’re so so interested in ancient symbology etc?

Justanotherlurker · 06/11/2022 20:25

I think what you are trying to skirt around is that if this was in any other publication then it would potentially be called out.

It maybe would/could have made turned this thread be on a different angle if it appeared in a different publication, those saying it has a different historic meaning would be downplaying the nature of the symbol etc etc

But, It's a weak argument to pick up on, there are far better ones that you no doubt ignore. Take a step back and not look for offence in anything, you are not being a saviour, people are getting tired

oprahfan · 06/11/2022 20:46

‘Maybe’ being unreasonable @Igotjelly ? You WERE and are being unreasonable. I can’t believe 12% of numpties agree with you. Go and make a difference to some peoples lives that need it, instead of working other stupid people into a false froth along with you.

LargeHadronCollidHER · 06/11/2022 20:59

That’s the spiritual symbol, the Nazi swastika is the other way around, more ‘square’ and black

you are being incredibly offensive, unreasonable and ignorant

Okay I was being unreasonable and stand corrected.

Okay I was being unreasonable and stand corrected.

You was wanting outrage, the unreasonable angle is that you wanted confirmation, the fact you asked a question of if you should be offended will be lost on you, it's not just you as MN will go into a multi thread of a swastika being displayed in the background as aking to to the rising of hitler.

One day you will get it 'right' by calling out the right publication, until then you can feel safe in thinking you are doing the right thing...

KenAdams · 06/11/2022 21:22

God, don't go to a Hindus doorstep on Diwali, it will set you right off.

Igotjelly · 06/11/2022 21:22

I really do apologise if I’ve caused offence it was absolutely not intended. Ironically this thread turned out to be the own goal on question….

I think if you look very hard it's in the middle of the picture behind her right shoulder; which is hardly 'front and centre.'

You can’t see it because there isn’t one.

I am German and a western person displaying this sign, would be instantly put into the extreme right corner - and I do not think I would take the time to examine a possible conversion to Hinduism, direction of the 'branches' etc. i would just feel nauseated.

RambamThankyouMam · 06/11/2022 21:30

I have a keen eye for a swastika, but I genuinely don't see one on this image.

Displaying what sign?

A Hindu symbol, that a different shape colour and direction to the Nazi swastika?
