To hope for a white Christmas?

Yes I know. I'm totally unreasonable. Cost of living. Excessive heating costs etc. I'm affected too. I'm hardly rolling in it.

I KNOW I should be hoping for a mild winter BUT I just cant help it. I love me a proper snowy Christmas.

Just a few days of snow will do me. I'm not asking for the whole of December. Not that what I would like will affect the weather either way.

Am I the only one?

Prepared to be told I'm an awful, selfish bitch. This IS AIBU after all 😂

Goes without saying, I hope, that this is lighthearted.

I've only ever seen a light dusting of snow on xmas

Yes. It's never too cold for snow. There's no such thing. It's a myth. Makes me laugh though.

i wonder if it comes from the fact that it’s generally always colder under a clear sky, no clouds no snow. Clouds help keep the temperature up.

gogohmm · 06/11/2022 13:53

I know what you mean but I've moved to the coast so never snows

TwoRockSalmonAndAHaporthOfChips · 06/11/2022 14:00

I was just trying to remember the last white Christmas here in the West Country, and it’s not easy! I do remember driving to and from the in-laws
with deep snow on the sides of the road and very icy conditions, so that means sometime in the last 25 years. But not for a while. About 10-15 years ago we had a couple of years in a row where we couldn’t get the cars out to go back to work after new year. But it’s more common for us to have snow later in Jan and Feb.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 06/11/2022 16:23

Last white Christmas I remember was 2010. But we did have snow in Dec a few years ago just not at actual Christmas.

YANBU

And the current forecast gives hope too!

It never snows at Christmas, though, in the main, so it’s unreasonable to expect it.

Exactly. Snow at Easter is more common. In scotland at least.

Snow is fine for 1 day where you have nowhere to be and nothing you need to do at a specific time. Other than that, it is a total pain in the arse.

Ponoka7 · 06/11/2022 16:37

When people say that it's too cold for snow, they really mean too dry.

www.scientificamerican.com/article/what-is-the-meaning-of-th/#:~:text=But%20the%20atmosphere%20must%20contain,becomes%20unlikely%20in%20most%20places.

My DD has to walk home from work on Christmas Day, or wait at least an hour for a taxi. Snow means accidents, so as much as I love it, I don't wish for it over Christmas. Our hospitals already have makeshift wards on corridors, I dread to think what it is going to be like in the thick of winter.

Crankley · 06/11/2022 16:38

Thanks but no thanks. I'm physically disabled and the last time I took my mobility scooter out in snow it got stuck. If it hadn't been for two paramedics who stopped their car and pushed me and the scooter to my house, I would have presumably frozen to death.

Snow means house bound. You should try it some time.

GeorgeorRuth · 06/11/2022 16:40

Even though I shouldn't I always look forward to snow full stop let alone at Christmas, but rarely get any here and it usually lasts a day if we are lucky at the most. I remember snow that we had to shovel off the steps to get out of our house as a child in early/ mid 70s( southern England County) ..DM used to talk about the 60s snow and I was so envious.

ddl1 · 06/11/2022 16:41

I know we can't order a white or non-white Christmas; but I HAAAATE white Christmases! It's different, I suppose, if you live somewhere where it's supposed to be white at this time of year, and it's dealt with, and the pavements and roads are cleared regularly; but in England everything gets slushy and slippery and, as someone with some physical disabilities, I find it terrifying. 'White' = 'isolation and imprisonment' as far as I'm concerned. At least, nowadays we have technology to compensate for it to some degree, but I'd never wish for a white Christmas any more than I'd wish for another lockdown if it wasn't truly necessary!

Actually, I've been housebound for 3 years. No mobility scooter here, I can't afford it.
I do take your point though.

I know what you mean. It's like it's forgotten how to snow properly. Just melts so fast. Disappointing.

I'd be perfectly happy if it never snowed again.

mondaytosunday · 06/11/2022 17:50

I grew up where it usually was snowy at Christmas snd I miss it. I love snow! Snow has an insulating effect too so it wouldn't necessarily mean higher fuel bills. Inconvenient if it affected public transport fir those trying to get to work, then again my tube was terminated the other day 'due to rain', which is hardly an unusual occurrence! And poor kiddies - no more snow days now that they can go online!

AlwaysLatte · 06/11/2022 17:59

I would love a white Christmas personally, but a mild winter would make for an easier life for many (but... snow days/snowmen/sledging... sigh!)

frogface69 · 06/11/2022 18:04

I like the idea but not the reality. My roof leaks horrendously when it thaws. Teeming down the walls bad. I can't afford repairs. The roof will collapse entirely soon I'm sure.

RedHelenB · 06/11/2022 18:05

I'd love it, as long as all my family are able to make it to mine for Christmas alright.

asblindasabat · 06/11/2022 18:06

yes I’d love a white Christmas but sadly I think they are extinct due to global warming.

does anyone remember Christmas 2009 and 2010? they were both white Christmases. I remember them being torrential, I remember falling in the ice in 2009 but it was just so lovely!

I would love it. ❄️🌨️⛄☃️

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 06/11/2022 18:12

I want a good helping of snow, would be nice at Christmas but the truth is, I just want it because I want to try snow mode out on my car 🤣

2.5 years I've had this car and no snow to try it in yet.

BooksAndHooks · 06/11/2022 18:20

I’ve never seen a white Christmas. I think the idea sounds good but on a day trying to travel between family and limited transport would be a lot less romantic than anticipated.

LimeCheesecake · 06/11/2022 20:49

Ah but the best bit about a white Christmas is the excuse to cancel all rushing about plans, and take the sledge out.
