I don’t fucking understand this

I’ve posted before and still am not any further forward. I’m at my wits end and just don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve never been so miserable in all my life

i had an infection in my upper tooth root (the tooth was already filled) around a year ago and needed a root canal. I was in horrific pain- all across my cheek, my ear and my jaw and I couldn’t bite down on my tooth because it was excruciating. It wasn’t TN and I could pick out which exact tooth it was that hurt. There were nights I was up screaming and hitting my face off the wall it was so painful.

I had several antibiotic courses in the meantime but unfortunately nothing cleared it until I got the root canal. It was fine for a while after this and then the pain started again. Exact same tooth. I had several x rays and there’s no infection left, but I got another prescription at of antibiotics just to make sure it’s completely clear. It was fine for a week after I finished the dose and now it’s started hurting again- the exact same tooth. I can’t bite down on it at all without being in agony.

I don’t understand what’s going on with my mouth. My dentist is fantastic and I trust him and he was a bit unsure what’s causing it as tere’s no infection left behind, it’s been x rayed and the root canal was successful. I’m actually a bit frightened now, why is it still sore? Is it a problem with my face? What could it be if not an infected tooth?

I absolutely can’t get the tooth removed- because of the shape of my face and mouth it would be noticeable and obvious and I can’t afford to get it replaced with a bridge, implant or anything else. I can’t have a big gap in my face

i just want this all to stop. I’ve been in agony for almost a year and can’t keep taking cocodamol like sweeties.

Thanks for the advice, my dentist checked the x rays and the tooth and it seemed fine, I’m just at a complete loss about what it could be. They initially thought it might be sinusitis because of the face/ear/cheek pain but because my specific tooth was agony (they checked by tapping it) they said it was an infection.

this might be a complete coincidence but Im really prone to blocked noses- I have a blocked nose every single evening- I don’t have any allergies or sensitivities and it’s nothing in my environment causing it because it get it elsewhere too. There’s no triggers other than time of day- one of my nostrils just completely blocks around 7 pm and it alternates side but I don’t breath through both nostrils until the next morning again.

ive got nasal sprays and nothing helps it. I just have to wait until morning

not sure if it’s relevant or completely separate but just mentioning in case anyone has had similar

I have similar. Blocked nose every day until it clears in the evening. Nothing touches it - sprays, antihistamine, nothing, At the same time I have such pain in an upper back tooth (which is clear on xray). Dentist took one out next to it saying it was cracked inside and infected. Having that tooth out has not helped at all. Terrible pain all the time on that side. I am thinking there is a connection with the sinus blockage and the tooth pain. Dentist says its for the doctor to sort out and GP not interested (and isn't seeing people in person anyway) so I'm stuck. If I had money I would see an ENT doctor and a private dentist. Good luck and I hope you get fixed up.

maddening · 06/11/2022 00:07

I would have it taken out and put up with the aesthetic impact whilst saving for a bridge.

Agapornis · 06/11/2022 00:09

You really need to press your dentist for a hospital referral. Dental hospital treatment is free like the rest of NHS hospital treatment.

Pinkittens · 06/11/2022 00:11

Which antibiotics have you had? Different ones treat different types of infection.

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 06/11/2022 00:14

I had this, it was horrific, it would flare up every couple of weeks, bizarrely certain things I ate or drank seemed to trigger it. It was a miserable couple of years, the dentist kept x raying and saying there was no sign of infection and there was nothing wrong with the root canal. In the end I was lucky enough to be getting a free implant (offered my self as a Guinea pig to the local dental hospital) for a different gap and I asked if they’d pull my troublesome tooth and also do an implant there. They said they would but would try redoing the root canal first as always better to save a natural tooth where possible.

anyway they redid the root canal and the smell was so disgusting it made me retch, I remember in the letter they sent to my dentist they described it as a ‘pungent malodour’ which tbh was a kind way of describing it. It was vile. Anyway they washed the cavity out with pretty much bleach and redid the root canal and I’ve never had any problems with it since. The relief was blissful, for whatever reason the infection just didn’t show up in the x ray’s but it was definitely there.

i wish you luck. Toothache is the one pain I never wish to have as it so relentless and horrendous.

Want2beme · 06/11/2022 00:16

I've had 3 back teeth removed during the last couple of years. They seem to be giving out on me. I started seeing a different dentist for implants and she told me that infection cannot be fully removed with antibiotics, and extraction is the only way to deal with it. I have had a lot of dental pain, not like yours, and nuerofen plus works for me. Not a longterm solution, I know. One night I slept with a cold drinks can against my cheek, which stopped the pain. Not ideal, but maybe an ice pack will help when your pain is so bad?

I'd say see another dentist, or go to A&E?

BlueSkyAndButterflies · 06/11/2022 00:17

So return to your GP then? Get a prescription for meds to treat nerve pain (if there's no other cause) that won't cause addiction issues, then you can stop taking co-codamol. Or accept that preserving your looks isn't worth constant agonising pain and have the tooth pulled.

CapMarvel · 06/11/2022 00:19

Why are you putting yourself through this? Just get the tooth pulled and be done with it.

I can’t go to my GP, they don’t deal with any tooth related problems in my area anyway! They will just tell me to go back to the dentist, which I’m obviously going to do this week

SoreToof · 06/11/2022 00:21

I understand why people are saying I’m preserving my looks but it’s a lot easier said than done just to get it pulled out! I won’t be able to afford an implant any time soon and it’s a lot easier said than done to just get it removed and have a big gap in my face in my early 20s!

OP posts:
EmeraldShamrock1 · 06/11/2022 00:21

Could you get finance for an implant.

You've obviously already spent a lot of money on the orginal root canal.

I have no practical advice but you have my sympathy, tooth ache and nerve pain are horrific.

I hope you have luck with it soon.

SoreToof · 06/11/2022 00:22

Thanks for all the replies, I’ll definitely follow the advice and try to get to a dental hospital. That’s interesting that it can still be infected or cracked without showing on the x ray, that sounds like it’s probably the case doesn’t it! I’ll maybe need to get the root canal done again x

Try sinus flushing just in case it is to do with the blocked nose every night. You can get a kit from Neilmed or Flo. If it Doesn't help the tooth at least your nose will be clear.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 06/11/2022 00:23

You're early 20's of course you don't want a missing tooth.

I didn’t even realise this was something I could do at home! I’ve just been using sprays and antihistamines so far. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll pop into a pharmacy and get some x

And I remember the dental hospital were pretty blunt in their assessment of why my dentist hadn’t considered there might still be infection there and need to get the root canal redone and basically said ‘honestly, they’re a headache to do and can be very fiddly’.

But I was so grateful for what they did, not an understatement to say it changed my life at the time.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 06/11/2022 00:28

How long have you had this pain?

Your GP will offer medication similar to anti-tripalean. Don't know how to spell it correctly.

I'd horrendous sinus pain for 12 months after a wisdom tooth extraction.

My gp prescribed a nerve medication, the pain miraculous went after 12 months.

Ct showed music in maxillary sinus with couldn't have caused the agony, but the pain stopped eventually.

Steaming my face over the kettle helped.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 06/11/2022 00:28

Mucus not music 😐

CapMarvel · 06/11/2022 00:29

I've literally been down this path, multiple infections and attempts at root canal.

Sometimes root canal doesn't work, sometimes there are micro fractures in the tooth and no matter what is done or who looks at it the tooth will continue to cause pain. There has to be a point where you say enough is enough.

elizabethdraper · 06/11/2022 00:31

Sounds like a tumour\cyst

get an mri\pet

SarahJinx · 06/11/2022 00:34

It sounds to me that your root canal has failed and that perhaps you have really long, difficult roots. Your dentist SHOULD be referring you to a dentist that specialises in Roots now. I feel your pain, I’ve had horrors with my teeth a d there really isn’t anything worse.

Badgirlriri · 06/11/2022 00:38

sjxoxo · 05/11/2022 23:44

I would seek medical help - can you go to your GP or even A&E and see if you can see any kind of oral or dental specialist?? Xx

This is NOT something for A&E ffs.

If you read my post the GP was to prescribe effective painkillers if you decided to live with the pain rather than having the tooth extracted. I know you don't want the tooth extracted whenyiu can't afford an implant, who ever does?! But you don't want the pain either. Life is full of difficult choices

I did read your post- thanks for the advice but my GP will only give me pain killers until I can see the dentist again, they’ll advise going to see my dentist ASAP and getting another rct or whatever the dentist suggests rather than them giving me painkillers longer term for the pain

im not trying to be petty but if you read my post I’ve said multiple times already I don’t want the tooth out and I’m trying to find solutions that avoid that, I’m in my early 20s and really don’t want a big gap in my face x

Having a tooth out is shit but in your OP you literally say you are miserable. You can end that in about 10 minutes by having the tooth out and then you can perhaps save for an implant or a bridge.

It's not worth living in chronic pain and becoming dependent on painkillers to avoid what can be a temporary gap in your smile which literally nobody but you will care about.
