I don’t fucking understand this

I’ve posted before and still am not any further forward. I’m at my wits end and just don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve never been so miserable in all my life

i had an infection in my upper tooth root (the tooth was already filled) around a year ago and needed a root canal. I was in horrific pain- all across my cheek, my ear and my jaw and I couldn’t bite down on my tooth because it was excruciating. It wasn’t TN and I could pick out which exact tooth it was that hurt. There were nights I was up screaming and hitting my face off the wall it was so painful.

I had several antibiotic courses in the meantime but unfortunately nothing cleared it until I got the root canal. It was fine for a while after this and then the pain started again. Exact same tooth. I had several x rays and there’s no infection left, but I got another prescription at of antibiotics just to make sure it’s completely clear. It was fine for a week after I finished the dose and now it’s started hurting again- the exact same tooth. I can’t bite down on it at all without being in agony.

I don’t understand what’s going on with my mouth. My dentist is fantastic and I trust him and he was a bit unsure what’s causing it as tere’s no infection left behind, it’s been x rayed and the root canal was successful. I’m actually a bit frightened now, why is it still sore? Is it a problem with my face? What could it be if not an infected tooth?

I absolutely can’t get the tooth removed- because of the shape of my face and mouth it would be noticeable and obvious and I can’t afford to get it replaced with a bridge, implant or anything else. I can’t have a big gap in my face

i just want this all to stop. I’ve been in agony for almost a year and can’t keep taking cocodamol like sweeties.

This article is terrifying....

Yes, it really is, which is why it stuck with me for so long.

Hi, I am not saying that your diagnosis is the same but I was in a similar position a couple of years ago with a back tooth with a dental history, it had been filled, then root canal then crowned. Then it started to hurt, really badly . I trusted and still do my dentist. I was on almost constant antibiotics, analgesia and regular X-rays , nothing to be seen . I even gave away my sonic toothbrush as it made the pain worse. My dentist is a tooth conservationist but after 2 years of agony he made decision to remove the tooth. When he removed the tooth he found 3 vertical fractures in the tooth that were not visible on the X-ray. He apologised [not his fault) Same with other bones in the body. X-rays are not always diagnostic. Pain is a symptom not a diagnosis, go back and keep going back to your trusted dentist until s/he gets the message it is unbearable.

I had something similar with an upper tooth. Not front tooth but one next to it. Had a few root canals until it was decided I should have the tooth pulled. After getting tooth pulled I decided to get an implant. At the consultation a full head scan was done and they discovered I had a cyst near/in the jaw that had not been noticed before. This is what was causing my pain. So ultimately I had a tooth pulled for nothing. Had several x-rays done before but none high enough to find the true cause of my pain. Not saying this is the cause for you, but worth ruling it out!

How was the cyst in your jaw treated - did you have to have it surgically removed, or did antibiotics work?

lovelilies · 08/11/2022 07:03

@SoreToof you're on Facebook by the way 😊😬

CrystalCauldronWitch · 08/11/2022 07:40

I sympathise… Have the darn thing out; toothache is the pits. You can get a temporary ‘filler’ tooth, try diytooth.com, which will help you feel less self-conscious, then save some money each month to have a bridge. All the best

Dingdong90 · 08/11/2022 07:42

It could be an infection , I had root canal twice on one tooth which was successful but in the gap where they did the root canal an infection brewed for a year. I ended up having an operation to remove the root altogether and have the space filled with packing which solved the issue. It was called apicoectomy. Worth looking into it as it took my dentist ages to find the problem and suggest this

GreenSunfish · 08/11/2022 07:57

That sounds terrible. I had extreme pain in a tooth once but it turned out to be a different tooth that was the source of the pain. I think it was called referred pain. Maybe your dentist could look to see if another tooth is causing the pain. It was something about a specific nerve that leads to a few teeth. I hope you get it fixed fast.

Vynalbob · 08/11/2022 08:01

Bone infection is a thing, I'd see my GP and ask 2b referred to a maxillofacial consultant if necessary (sooner rather than later...given history GP might think it urgent)
Good Luck

Mmbells · 08/11/2022 08:10

Sounds like the tooth is dying. If that’s the case it needs to be pulled. I appreciate not wanting to have a gap. Due to my medical issues I’ve had one for years in my front teeth finally got dentures- free on nhs.
m you need to decide wether looks or pain free is more important. Also you run the risk that if it is an infection it could quickly end up septic or spread.
I have to say after reading your responses I honestly can’t understand why you posted? You seem to know that the only real option is to try another RTC which will possibly fail, or have the tooth removed and you don’t seem to want to do either so what exactly were you looking for by posting on here? Makes no sense! I was sympathetic when I first read your post having been there and been made to feel self conscious about my smile due to tooth loss, but the way you’ve spoken to people quickly removed that sympathy.

I had a friend who had similar and she only went with Holistic dentists after that. Weirdly previous to that we both had root canals that went squidgy and cracked to the root and had to be pulled out including the root. Both told very rare this happens with Root canals . That was 2 grand I would never see again. We had both seen Root cause the documentary . My friend then had another root canal but had so many health issues and pain it was driving her to insanity as like u no problems identified in Xrays. She went on a health self discovery and made the decision to have the tooth pulled the health issues cleared after time. She then had the issue of trusting and finding a dentist she could be on the same page as advice wise As in admit that drilling out and cleaning a root to then put a cap on it is a breeding ground for its never going to be sterile and channels below. Sorry I am not a dentist or a doctor but my friend found a holistic dentist helpful as a starting point.

Yeah, the people who have told me im dismissing everyone’s suggestions because I’ve told them 10 times I can’t just afford or save up for a 300 quid bridge, even if it is ‘jUsT 300 pOuNdS!!!!’

unsurprisingly it gets frustrating saying that 10 times to the same person. but apparently that makes me rude

its funny how nearly 200 other commenters managed to grasp that I can’t just afford 300 quid

But that’s just it you DONT have to save up £300!!! If it’s that bad you’d find a way to live without it!!! What exactly were you wanting from this thread? No where did I say you should save, nope I pointed out that the implications to your long term health could be bad.

have you ever had sepsis? I have. Let me tell you it’s no fun.

Inyournewdress · 08/11/2022 10:16

Apologies if this has already been discussed but some dentists offer a payment plan to pay over time.

rosesareredandpink · 08/11/2022 10:59

Apologies for not reading through the whole thread, but I had similar symptoms last year and it was incredibly painful and distressing, so firstly I'm sending sympathy and hugs. For me, it felt like I was being electrocuted across my face from the lower side of my jaw, paralysing me with extreme pain for a few minutes, several times a day. After ruling out a potential crack in my tooth with my dentist, I was referred to an oral surgeon who took X rays and completed further tests to rule out a tooth fissure (which they were sure it was, but it wasn't). Eventually, they removed a fragment of my wisdom tooth that had been left in 14 years ago, deemed too deep to remove at the time (I had all wisdom teeth removed 14 years ago). The oral surgeon was reluctant to operate as he wasn't sure this was the cause, but he eventually did (I had to demand it) and I stopped experiencing that excruciating stabbing pain immediately. The whole process was lengthy, costly and extremely distressing. I hope you get to the bottom of it soon. Best of luck!

Beautiful3 · 08/11/2022 11:26

My mum had root canal that triggered a flare in her nerves. It was neuralgia. Would you get a second opinion from another dentist, or ask your gp to refer you to a consultant?

EatforEngland · 08/11/2022 12:11

It sounds like you need a referral to a maxillofacial surgeon - they specialise in all things mouth/teeth/facial nerve etc. I don't know if your dentist can refer you or if it has to come from your GP, but worth asking.

even If you save £2 a week you will get there in the end 🤨

Thank you so much everyone who’s helped me and given me advice, I really really appreciate it (even if the advice was to get it removed, I still appreciate you taking the time to comment and share experiences etc)

the only posts I’ve been annoyed at are the ones being sarky at me for not wanting to remove it, or for pretending not to understand that some people can’t pay ‘just £300!’ I don’t know why the concept of not being able to save anything is so difficult for some people to get through their heads but I’m not going to waste my time replying to those people anymore

I’m sure I’ve got some sudafed in the house (sorry I can’t find the post to quote it) but I’ve not tried it yet, so I’ll try it tonight thanks for the tip.

it’s bizarre, one minute my tooth is fine (like right now, I’ve just eaten food on it and it was painless) then other times it’s excruciating. That’s another reason I wasn’t in any rush to remove it in case it wasn’t the tooth that was the problem!

Your story is virtually identical to what happened to my DH, he had constant flare-ups for almost 30 years until he got a decent dentist who removed the chip of tooth for him.

vickylou78 · 08/11/2022 13:58

My sympathy OP. Get back to your NHS dentist and see what they can do. It does sound like the root canal hasn't quite worked. Good luck!!
Also if you do have to have the tooth out, try not to look at it as a permanent thing. I know you say you can't afford money for a bridge now but it's something you can aim for in the future isn't it? Pay on credit and pay later, save up over next couple of years. Good luck hope you are pain free soon.

BananaCocktails · 08/11/2022 14:09

I had both upper and lower side teeth removed because of The same issue,

As I cannot afford an implant and don’t want a bridge because they ruin the other teeth, The dentist is going to give me a partial denture- it’s basically a fake tooth with a gum on it and you just place it in where the tooth cavity is , it sits in place
the tooth will cover the gap and it will look natural , you can take it out at night
i had mine done on the NHS free , I suggest you have the tooth removed -stop for this pain once and for all and do what I did
if You are not entitled to a NHS discount and are on a low income you can apply for your prescription charges to be paid for via A HC3 form

I’m not sure why your dentist has not advised this option that’s a bit strange
