To ditch the hairdresser?

ItsAllABit · 05/11/2022 22:52

I get my hair coloured every 6 weeks. It costs around £80 everytime.

i hate it, the cost, the sitting for hours …

my appointment today was for 11am. I didn’t get seen until 11:30. 12:30 im still sat waiting for the dye to be washed off. I eventually got out at 1:30. I only went in for my roots to be done!

so tempted to ditch hairdressers and go back to £5 home dyes

How strange. If you don't like it, just don't go. Surely noone is marching you to Toni & Guy at gunpoint. Go to Boots and buy a box dye...

maddy68 · 05/11/2022 22:55

I have dyed my own hair for years

ItsAllABit · 05/11/2022 22:57

are the home dyes any good? I’ve not used them for years. Which one is the best to use?

I feel the same but also feel dull with just my natural mousy colour.
The Wella highlighting kit was recommended on a similar thread by a very helpful lady @lindyloo57.

StripeyDeckchair · 05/11/2022 23:01

That is why I colour my hair myself
I do not have the time to spend half a day having my hair coloured - at home I can potter whilst the colour is on so its not wasted time & I don't spend ages waiting while the hairdresser deals with her other clients.

whattodo87 · 05/11/2022 23:04

I ditched my hairdresser as she left me, when I was ready to be washed, and had her own hair done !!!

Went to a different hairdresser though as I've never used the home kits.

Morestrangethings · 05/11/2022 23:04

I was considering having my grey hair coloured after years of no colouring, (it looks dull and can be aging -it is aging on me), but your post OP reminded me of what a chore hairdressers are.

FlissyPaps · 05/11/2022 23:08

If it’s just your roots that need doing then definitely DIY!

I personally like Garnier Olia range. Not expensive and have lots of colour options.

OrangePomander · 05/11/2022 23:12

I ditched my long-standing hairdresser for always running extremely late and taking ages to do an average cut. I was regularly in there for two hours (no colouring involved, I use home box dye).
After a couple of false starts I’ve found an awesome hairdresser who is always on time and takes under 30 minutes for consultation, wash, a great cut and style. Not cheap though, but I gain in time and a better end result.

If I'm in a rush, the hairdresser puts my colour on and then I leave. She tells me how long to wait before I wash it off and gives me a little plastic shower cap to put on and I pull my hoodie over the top. Would that help you time wise?

wtfisgoingonhere21 · 05/11/2022 23:28

This is down to bad time management.

I've been in the industry for 30 years and I don't ever run over by more than 10-15 mins because I make sure I have the right amount of time allocated per client and I don't except late arrivals if more than 10 mins over their time slot.

It takes a huge amount of precision to organise and stay on track with a fully booked client list but part of the whole experience is not to be left waiting for ages to be started or worse to be left too long with colour on etc.

Snugglemonkey · 05/11/2022 23:55

I cannot be doing with the hairdresser's for this reason. I hate it. I home dye now and just get a wash, cut and blow dry every 2 months.

allboysherebutme · 06/11/2022 00:01

I go to someone home, much quicker, no other customers to go off to and leave you. X

Why would that be unreasonable Confused

Zipps · 06/11/2022 00:09

I use a mobile hairdresser who is a family friend for a trim three times a year - £20 a time.
I have always hated going to the hairdresser, hanging around for ages, pressure to buy products and have treatments, not really ending up with what you want after spending a small fortune.

£80 every six weeks. That’s roughly £688 a year.

Seems pretty unreasonable considering the current financial crisis.

Gronkle · 06/11/2022 01:24

I've been dying my own consistently for 36 years, I've only ever had a hairdresser due twice in all that time and I was unhappy with it, I can do it better myself. I use loads of different ones, I'm also perfectly happy with Nice & Easy which lots of people sneer at.

PaleGreenFrontDoor · 06/11/2022 01:46

I use Esalon, absolutely brilliant. Easy to use website and so helpful if you want to change colour. The blonde colour I got from them is way better than I got at my salon, not to mention way cheaper.
