Bonfire night!

AIBU to think that complaining about the noise is ridiculous. My facebook feed is full of people moaning:

"It's too loud, it's affecting my elderly mum and her health condition"
"I can't hear the telly..."
"the cat's hiding"
"how can people afford fireworks- we're in a cost of living crisis?"

Really...?

I never complain on SM about the fireworks, however, I struggle to understand how the same people who let off loud fireworks on November 5th, which can trigger PTSD episodes in veterans, then loudly proclaim to be 'respecting' our armed forces, past and present, just 6 days later. 🤔
I also find it strange that people who let off loud fireworks seem to focus on domesticated animals and suggest calming measures such as leaving a radio on, putting said animal in a thunder coat etc, yet fail to consider the terrifying effect on wild animals who dont have access to a radio or a thunder coat. 🤔
There is literally no point in complaining about it, because people wont stop for any of the reasons cited, whether that be about traumatised animals, wild or domestic, or traumatised people.
I cant imagine how it must feel to shut out the suffering of others and only focus on my own short lived enjoyment, but I imagine it is quite a liberating way to feel.

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 05/11/2022 23:01

It started with Diwali though

XenoBitch · 05/11/2022 23:01

I am lucky in that my dog gives 0 fucks about the fireworks.. but I know of people who struggle to get their pets' anxiety under control, and some have even had pets die.

FlissyPaps · 05/11/2022 23:03

YANBU. It’s the same old shit every year. (Apart from the cost of living crisis)

I don’t understand the complaining on social media - it literally achieves nothing.

XenoBitch · 05/11/2022 23:03

It would be ok if it was just one night. The fireworks started here last night, and they will go on until tomorrow night too.

StarDolphins · 05/11/2022 23:08

I do t complain on SM, it’s pointless & pointless to complain here but I’m going to!

I don’t mind for 1 night but it goes on for 2 weeks by me & they’re still going off now, 11pm, my DD woke at 10.10pm by them on thurs night & I feel sorry for all the animals & people bothered by them.

Maverickess · 05/11/2022 23:10

There's been a lot less around here this year, none at all last night or in the last week, and then around two hours on and off and then it all stopped. I'm grateful for it.
My dog got a bit wound up but nothing compared to previous years where it's gone on for days at all hours and had a much bigger impact than it needed to and she needed sedation.
I don't resent it until it's random bangs every night for a month either side of Bonfire Night, during the day (what's the point?!) And through the night as well.

I have seen tonight that our local fire service has been targeted with rocks and fireworks when attending call outs, it's absolutely disgusting, how on earth do people get the idea to do this?

TheGuv1982 · 05/11/2022 23:14

I won’t lie, fireworks bore the hell out of me…but not as much as the inevitable Social media posts in the lead up to Bonfire night asking me to consider “Pets/babies/the environment”.

Oh dear, that is just shitty :(

I really enjoy fireworks. But I do think they should probably be limited to one day each for Bonfire Night, Diwali and New Year, and then only organised displays. It’s really dangerous to set of your own, and this would limit the adverse affects on the groups who are affected badly by them.

Ask anyone who works in A&E this time of year.. huge influx of kids with firework injuries. No need for it at all.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 05/11/2022 23:22

I agree with you, it's not worth complaining on social media about it.....but, why do people buy the very loudest fireworks for home displays.

I went to a massive professional display today and it was no where near as loud as the 10 minute disorganised, poxy ones that are still going off now in neighbours gardens.

allboysherebutme · 05/11/2022 23:23

I don't like loud noises, wish they would make ones with no noise, like it Japan. It frightens animals, wakes up babies and fills the air with smog, I think they should not be sold to the public only used in displays.
It's getting late now and someone in my street is still letting them off. X

Rosebel · 05/11/2022 23:24

I don't complain on fb etc because there's absolutely no point. I do hate them though as they are a huge trigger for my autistic DD.
If it was one night it would be easier to deal with but it goes on for days and days. Like I said no point complaining because people will continue to do it anyway.

user1471505494 · 05/11/2022 23:26

I hate it. I end up being outside trying to make sure my ponies aren’t panicking too much. The re is nothing I can do to deaden the noise from them. The idiots over the road let them off at all hours and I’m sick of it

Shouldawouldacoulda30 · 05/11/2022 23:27

Tonight my doggie has been lying under a blanket with strictly on and has been fine. Her main issue has been the weather !

itsnotmeitsu · 05/11/2022 23:27

@Junipercrumble > I'm of the same mind as you. And why does there have to be such loud bangs from fireworks, when they would still be enjoyable with the lights/sparks and noises but with quieter bangs? If you're not taking part in the displays, and you've got a terrified pet, you're experience is all about the massive bangs.

purfectpuss · 05/11/2022 23:27

It's one night (in theory) and I understand how annoying it is when it's going on for weeks, but complaining about it actually on the 5th of November...?

Do people really think think that a traditional festival shouldn't take place anymore because it triggers war veterans, or other similar arguments?

OP posts:
Discovereads · 05/11/2022 23:29

I really enjoy the fireworks as does my DH. We’re both veterans and it doesn’t trigger our PTSD as believe it or not, fireworks don’t sound anything like gunfire or mortar rounds. 🤨

I was with you until this point. Even voted YANBU. But I think it's a bit shitty to not care about people with PTSD.
It's bonfire night not firework night.
Pretty sure they didn't set off fireworks when they did Guy Fawkes in.
It's not "traditional" to blow up the sky with fireworks that are more sound than light, even on 5th November, it's just how we currently celebrate it in British culture atm.

firesideglow · 05/11/2022 23:36

I like a well done, organised, public firework display. I cannot stand the wankers setting them off as soon as it gets dark from mid October till mid January. Usually until about midnight any day of the week. I don't complain on social media. My cats don't like them but they're not that fussed after a while. Kids always sleep through.
However, I find it utterly ridiculous that any one over 18 can go into a shop, buy explosives and let them off in the street/gardens without any safety training or a licence. The damage to buildings/houses/trees/natural habitats round where I am over the last few years, due to fireworks, has been astronomical.

firesideglow · 05/11/2022 23:39

Your comment about triggering war veterans is shameful. Yes actually I do think this relatively modern 'tradition' of the average Joe Bloggs setting off explosives should be banned due to numerous reasons, including protecting people traumatised by war.

There would not be the same scope for injury if it was limited to organised displays though.

It isn't traditional to have such noise though.

Fireworks have got bigger and louder over the years and decades.

I love going to a bonfire. I enjoy watching fireworks - but you can do that without the volume of noise fireworks have now.

Your comments about people with PTSD are shameful though.

Nat6999 · 05/11/2022 23:50

I hate bonfire night & fireworks, always have from being a child, it must be an autism thing.
