Yet another thread about price increases - Christmas dinner....

I know the cost of everything's creeping (sometimes jumping) up, and I didn't think Christmas was going to be any different, but wow, this was a shock today....

I went to the butcher's this morning, and picked up the Christmas leaflet. When I came home, I looked up what I ordered for Christmas last year, and compared the prices. Traditional cure ham is 25% more this year. Turkey is 44% more! Bloody hell...

There’s a shortage of turkeys isn’t there? Due to Avian Flu? Or have a I made that up?

Quincythequince · 05/11/2022 14:06

YABU to be surprised. Honestly.
Just think about the cost of rearing, slaughtering, transporting, storing the turkeys and then think about fuel increases and the fact that domestic customers prices have gone far less than those for commercial entities (which turkey farming is).

How many more threads like this.

Its shit but it’s hardly a surprise.

Well you were warned in the thread title.....

And yes, there's avian flu, but have turkey flocks been lost to that so far?

Rather than going to the butcher, try browsing for local farms.

Our ham and chicken come from the local farm and are less expensive.

Could you list the prices this year and last?

Would be really interesting and this years prices a comparison for me when I start to take a look around to order.

I think it's more because all flocks have to be under cover at the moment to prevent spread, so there is less space available and consequently producers have not bred as many

Every aspect of our life as we live it is dependent on fuel! We are almost wholly reliant on imported fuel, so where prices have gone up by as much as they have, you can expect to see it reflected.
Inflation is circa 10% too.
A 22% increase in meat is in line with that.

YABU to be surprised. What exactly is the surprise here. That and the bird flu issues means demand and supply are also off kilter.

Biy a frozen turkey at ALDI. A medium one was £16.99 last week.

Defrost in time and brine it a la Nigella, all done.

Or just go veggie.

The amount of turkeys being culled due to Avian Flu is bad. ... see photos. ... The cost of rearing them due to feed increases is astronomical this year. We normally breed turkeys here ourselves, (for sale live, not dead) and this year we cut our production by 60% just because feed was going up so much. We are only a small producer, but I'd imagine there are many more like us. I'd imagine turkeys will be 35% more expensive than last year.

Where does the butcher get his produce?

Birds eat cereals - gone up in price due to Ukraine, fertiliser costs, fuel costs etc. They use energy for heating barns, fuel for vehicles, it costs more to hire people to look after them and slaughter, butcher and package them. And yes, bird flu is decimating the poultry industry.

I put YANBU because numerous aspects of life are going up together (groceries, eating out, fuel, utilities and mortgage rates) and we have nothing to show for it. To a small extent, it's the hangover from covid-19 pandemic and then the rest of it is down to Greta Thunberg / COP26 and Putin's little war.

From a farm, but then butchers add their mark-up to cover high street rent, business rates, staff costs and electricity. Which can add an extra 50%.
