Is this normal for a baby?

Dd is 6 months old and has had diarrhoea for over a week now. She is otherwise well as in no temperature, feeding well, wet nappies and so on but she does seem irritable and is crying a lot more. She's also getting her first two teeth through so it could be that.

I spoke to our health visitor and visited the GP who checked her over and wasn't overly worried. But how long will this go on for? She is pooping after most of her feeds and it's always very liquid which quite often means an outfit change Envy

Have you started weaning? Introduced any new foods that may be disagreeing with her?

auntfester22 · 05/11/2022 10:42

We had just started a few things but I've stopped and just gone back to her normal formula while she's been unwell.

Probably teething. All that saliva produces can have an irritating affect on the bowel Babies often get sore bottoms with teething.

Just coming back to this thread as dd is still having loose poos (although not as often which is good) but she is also waking up screaming a lot. Like something is really disturbing and distressing her. The GP checked her temperature in her ear but didn't look in her ear to check for infection. She hasn't had a fever so hopefully it's not that but I'm just at a loss as to what's upsetting her so much. Her teeth have broken through the gum now so surely it can't still be that? She is really stuffing her hand in her mouth a lot though.

I just don't know what to do next. When she's awake she's alert and happy enough. She's also still feeding well. But something is clearly bothering her.

Teething. It’s much worse at night. Give her nurofen and anbesol liquid before bed.

Jubaju · 06/11/2022 19:59

Yes that does sound like teething - but a week of loose nappies seems excessive for teeth. Have you given her calpol or anything for her teeth ? (Night screaming also pretty normal)

MajorCarolDanvers · 06/11/2022 20:02

Definitely sounds teething.

QWE96 · 06/11/2022 20:05

Hi , OP. Sounds tough for you both! If it helps; when my son teething, his first signs of a breakthrough, were diarrhoea and nappy rash (only time he ever got nappy rash).

If you still feel concerned though, please don't be afraid to get a second opinion X

JustMarriedBecca · 06/11/2022 20:05

Yup second teething. I'd give Nurofen over Calpol as it's anti inflammatory. Also my DD had 16 teeth by the time she was one. They alllllll came through. It wasn't just one. She had teeth coming from 4 months until 10 months and it was GRIM.

Particularly as she was BF 😳

Mischance · 06/11/2022 20:08

Mine used to get the squits when they were teething. Humans are full of design faults!

If she is feeding OK and weeing and not got a temp it is likely to be the teeth. But if there is anything else - not feeding, floppy, not responding normally etc- then the doc needs to see her again.

auntfester22 · 06/11/2022 20:08

Yes she's been having calpol for her teeth and also some bonjela teething gel. It does feel excessive that the loose poos have been going on for so long and that she's still waking up in pain now that they've broken through the gum, unless there are more coming that I can't see or feel yet.

It's so hard when they can't tell you what the issue is, I feel super anxious :-(

If you're introducing foods and the timing tallies her bad tummy and unsettled at night with weaning, I'd wonder if she can't tolerate something she's eaten.

Can you list the foods she's having?

I made my DD unwell when she was this sort of age as I didn't realise that the high latex content in avocado and banana could be a problem for babies to digest.

I also only realised she had a dairy allergy when I started giving her yoghurt to eat.

MsTaz · 06/11/2022 20:51

Sometimes the teething gel also causes the loose poo’s. Massage babies head, jaw and neck to relax tense muscles before bedtime and then again in the morning. Poor baby. This helped my little one.

auntfester22 · 06/11/2022 20:53

@ItsNotReallyChaos she is already on a dairy free diet/formula after being diagnosed with suspected CMPA at 2 months old. But to be honest since she's been unwell I haven't been offering her anything other than her milk anyway as I didn't want to irritate her belly any more.

My DS can have one dose of calpol, then anymore gives him diarrhoea. Nurofen always gives him the squits from does one but was worth it for teething. It is a thing - his nursery would happily take him with calpol bum if he was obviously teething and are really hot on sending them home with upset tummies.

Pleasegodgotosleep · 06/11/2022 21:21

Kids with cmpa can also be allergic to the ingredients in calpol.
