Quitting weed after 10+ years

I smoke weed instead of cigarettes. I'll smoke when I get up with my coffee, I'll go for "cigarette" breaks, I'll smoke it at night before bed. I dont think I've gone more than 48 hours without smoking it in well over 10 years. I would say that I'm addicted to it, I don't have withdrawals and I'm not climbing the walls if I can't get any, but I do rely on it heavily.

Recently something has happened in my life and I've decided to quit, cold turkey. I'm about a week in and I'm feeling pretty good, it's really nice to be fully sober. I don't do any other drugs nor do I drink, btw.

However, my appetite has completely gone and I don't feel quite right. I'm not sure if it's because I'm so used to being stoned all the time, but I feel different now.

Has anyone else had experience with this? I'm not sure if I should make an appointment with my GP just to give my health a general once over, or if I'm just being paranoid (ironically).

Absolutely make appointment

good on you?

do you have children? If so, they will keep you going!

Mushroomkethup · 04/11/2022 17:02

Good on you!!!!!!

not a ?

ThreeblackCats · 04/11/2022 17:02

Best of luck getting a GP’s appointment just for a “general once over”.

My husband has just had a phone consultation to be told he will be referred to a cancer specialist! But if you think you need a doctors appointment go for it.

I’ve been there. Well done in quitting! They say it takes 3 weeks for it to leave your system properly, so I’d just make sure you are properly hydrated and carry on. I remember the first week or two of withdrawal being the worst, and not feeling right. It faded.

Mushroomkethup · 04/11/2022 17:03

And it is not a once over

you say that you have a drug addition that you have gone old Turkey and you are concerned about withdrawal symptoms

are you overweight?

Seebee · 04/11/2022 17:03

Hi op, I don’t have any informed advice on this (bar my lay-person’s suggestion in the next para!*), but I just wanted to say well done! I quit the booze this summer and it also feels great. Keep going, the first 30 days can be the challenge. Then aim for 90 days weed-free and it’s blue skies ahead.

*ref feeling a bit out of sorts, that might be quite normal as your body readjusts. If it were me, I’d leave it 10 days and, if still feeling Ill, or if getting worse, then book the gp!

Scarling · 04/11/2022 17:05

Congratulations!

I smoked daily for 15 years. My hunger cues came back after a month or so - I think a dip in appetite is normal at first as stoned hunger feels different, takes you a while to adjust.

ratsrats · 04/11/2022 17:05

the days of going to a GP for a general check up are long gone. you were constantly smoking an appetite stimulant and now you’re not, of course your appetite has changed!

KateBalesCardi · 04/11/2022 17:18

I quit for 5 years (have slipped back into it now unfortunately) after being an all-day smoker for 25 years. It coincided with a major shock/event in my life so I felt weird anyway, kind of displaced and zero appetite but I can't honestly say how much of that was withdrawal and how much was the shock of what happened.

Whichever it was it took 3-4 weeks to start to feel more normal and for my appetite to pick up so I wouldn't worry too much just yet. Are you managing to eat anything? As long as you're managing small amounts and drinking plenty I'd give it another couple of weeks and see how you feel. Well done btw, I'm preparing myself to give quitting another go but having a shit time atm and it just feels like one thing too many to tackle.

Yeah I know getting a GP appointment lately is like finding a needle in a 57 mile high hay stack, I just mean I'm not sure if I'm not feeling quite right because of something else or if it's because of the withdrawl lol.

I'm generally in good health, not overweight and I exercise every day. I have been forcing at least 2 meals a day since quitting, I have lost about 6 lbs but probably because I'm not stoned binging chocolate and sweets every night now 😅

Good to know my appetite should come back!

Your appetite will come back in time, but as PPs have said, just make sure you’re getting something down and that you’re drinking enough.

One side effect I had, which took a good couple of weeks to kick in, was vivid dreams and horrible nightmares, so be aware that might be coming. It didn’t last too long though.

Billyhargrovesmullet · 04/11/2022 17:35

It’s absolutely normal to lose your appetite when stopping (I’ve a 30 year habit I’ve dipped in and out of and currently in recovery) as it gives you ‘the munchies’ so when you stop that feeling goes. Well done for stopping

FiveMins · 04/11/2022 17:39

Lost my appetite for about a month on stopping. Best decision I ever did. Love having a clear head and motivation!

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 04/11/2022 18:14

Don't be surprised if you start experiencing lots of vivid dreams, and remembering them every morning when you first wake up...

NairobiGal · 04/11/2022 18:37

I think you're absolutely sensible to go to your GP to get support for your drug addiction. Well done OP. It's not just a once over for someone who is 100% healthy and drug free. You've smoked marijuana every day almost for 10 years and aren't feeling right. Your GP might have some good advice and resources for you. Absolutely go, it won't hurt and is entirely justified.
