We had an electrician in this week to replace a broken extractor fan. The fan is above the toilet. He'd been round before to look at the fan and attempt a fix so knew where it was etc so when he arrived I let him in and he went off to the bathroom, I didn't follow him or watch what he did at all. I passed the bathroom about an hour later and saw he had a ladder up to get to the fan so there was definitely space for the ladder next to the toilet
He came and found me to tell me he was finished and asked me to transfer payment then and there which I did and he left
About 10 minutes after he left I went into the bathroom to use the toilet and noticed the lid of the toilet seat is broken. It's snapped clean through near the hinge and is very obvious, a huge piece of plastic is sticking out sideways from the toilet where the hinge no longer folds. So we definitely would have noticed this if it was there before he arrived. It seems like he's stood on the lid of the toilet to reach the fan, snapped it and then gotten his ladder instead.
I'm annoyed he didn't mention he'd broken the toilet seat and to be honest would have expected him to replace the toilet seat at his own expense. But is this unreasonable? Is damage by a tradesman something I just need to accept or should he have made good the damage? Or at least owned up to it!
