Do you get your dog groomed?

Settle an argument between me and DH he thinks its totslly normal to pay to get your dog groomed. I think this is the epitome of bourgeois excess. Should I LTB?

I pay £45 every six weeks to get my dog groomed - part of the cost of owning a non moulting dog.

Wolfiefan · 03/11/2022 22:15

Depends on the dog. I hand strip my hounds myself. But I wouldn’t manage to groom a poodle.

NoSquirrels · 03/11/2022 22:16

Depends what kind of dog it is.

Cockerpoo or poodle - needs regular clipping.

Labrador - needs nothing.

RebelliousStarrChild · 03/11/2022 22:16

Depends on the breed of the dog. Some breeds require professional level grooming others a quick bath and a towel will do.

HereLiesBetelgeuse · 03/11/2022 22:16

Depends on the breed. Some breeds need groomed for health reasons. I've seen some matted dogs that were suffering that really should have been groomed. Also double coated dogs will require hand stripping for keeping their coats waterproof.

BobbysGirly · 03/11/2022 22:16

What breed is your dog?

MomwasCasual · 03/11/2022 22:19

Yup and no.

Springer yes- 4x year, just to keep her looking fiiiiine.

Collie/ Greyhound foster- nope. No grooming parlour in the world could polish that turd.

CaronPoivre · 03/11/2022 22:22

Yes but not to make her cute or smell nice. She’s a long haired working breed with feathered tail, legs and belly. They get tangled and full of burrs and brambles if left untrimmed. She gets a hair cut but also gets ‘foofed’ and comes out smelling like Nell Gwynnes Boudoir. She is usually wearing a pink bow attached to her sensible tweed collar. Definitely ultimate naff but necessary, and she loves her two hours of indulgence from the girlies.

Alfiemoon1 · 03/11/2022 22:24

Depends on the breed my Lhasa gets groomed every 8 weeks I prefer to keep him in a puppy or teddy cut but even if I kept him in full long coat he would need round his eyes and face trimmed. My sister lab doesn’t need to go to the groomers he just needs a bath and a brush every so often

RoseDog · 03/11/2022 22:24

My Staffy no, I just bath her when she smells.

My parents Airedale goes every 8 weeks, he needs maintained!

XelaM · 03/11/2022 22:25

So what do you propose to do with a poodle? 🤷‍♀️

You have to groom certain breeds. No way around it.

Other breeds don't need grooming. We used to have a poodle - definitely needed regular grooming. We now have a pug - no grooming needed.

Lou98 · 03/11/2022 22:25

I'm a dog groomer, more people get their dogs groomed than don't. Otherwise I wouldn't be able to make a decent living from it 😂

Prior to working in a groomers I never got mine groomed but I have two short-haired, non shedding dogs so all they need is the occasional bath

RonnieMcdonnie · 03/11/2022 22:26

completely depends on the breed, my terrier cross breeds go around 4 times a year, some dogs need it every month, others not at all.

Notonthestairs · 03/11/2022 22:28

Poodle x - groomed every 6 weeks.

GeorgeorRuth · 03/11/2022 22:29

My girl goes to the groomers every 3 months. She has thick double coat but unlike some of the breeds within her ( cross breed) she doesn't blow her coat. It limits the amount of shed at home as she permanently moults instead. 🙈

DramaAlpaca · 03/11/2022 22:32

I wouldn't dream of having my springers groomed. One is short coated and doesn't need it, the other has a longer coat but I brush them both regularly and remove any knots. They are only ever bathed if they roll in something revolting, otherwise they get regular swims in the lake near us.

Buildingthefuture · 03/11/2022 22:33

Agree with PPs, depends on the breed. I have my long haired dogs groomed, they need a haircut by a professional…..(my DH tried to do it once….never again!!)
For my short haired dogs, I have a shed and blade and a separate shower (I have a lot of dogs!)

summergone · 03/11/2022 22:36

Nope , mine is short haired she will get a bath when we remember

ForYouManImADoomBoy · 03/11/2022 22:41

no. hes a short coated breed so he doesnt need a cut and hes fine to be bathed and brushed at home. his nails dont need clipping either as they are a combo of slow growing and hes walked regularly over a variety of different grounds so they stay neat and the right length. he does get a spray of doggie cologne though when he comes back from the kennels! they do it so they dont smell kennelly i guess and it smells like babypowder. if he ever did need his nails doing or soemthing though then yeah, id take him as i know theres no way i could keep hold of him long enough to get nail trimmers near him

BMW6 · 03/11/2022 23:12

My cross breed terrier has hair that grows very thick and curly, so needs a bath and haircut (very short) every 3 months or so. More often in hot weather.

I used to do it myself but cleaning up was a nightmare and I hated finding cut hair in corners for weeks afterwards. Plus he hated it and wouldn't let me do his tummy or legs.

So now he goes to groomers. £45 a time, but worth it to me.

Nothing bougious about it at all. Its for his comfort and saves me from a messy job.

10speckledfrogs · 03/11/2022 23:22

I'm 50 50

I don't find it necessary for my dogs in terms of welfare and hygiene - I have a German shepherd and a St Bernard Cross and am more than comfortable giving them a good brush and bath myself - even have a dog blower to blast all the undercoat out when they are shedding

But I do find it useful for socialisation reasons. Both my dogs are rescues and weren't socialised very well by the time I got them. They have come on leaps and bounds since arriving with us. I put them into a groomer I know once or twice a year- mainly so they get exposed to different sounds, people handling them, scents and floor textures. He gives the St Bernard Cross a hygiene cut around his back end while he is there for me because its easier for him to do that on a table with a belly band rather than have him flop on the ground while I try to do it at home.

They love it to be fair, they like to play with the groomers dog and enjoy the extra attention. They come out smelling lovely but it normally lasts 2 days most before they roll in something stinky.

elastamum · 03/11/2022 23:40

I bath and clip mine myself. I'm not paying £45 for a job I can do. Also keep horses so I am used to clipping and have decent clippers.

jtaeapa · 03/11/2022 23:47

I pay £22 every 6 weeks. Money well spent. My dog looks beautiful and she checks his ears, nails etc. His hair needs good care taken of it due to the breed and she helps me do this. It’s hardly bourgeois excess Confused.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 03/11/2022 23:53

I think this is the epitome of bourgeois excess

What a load of bollocks. I get my oodle mixes groomed. I try to keep them free from tangles but I just can't. Their groomer is amazing with them and they come back looking amazing. Nothing to do with bourgeois excess just me making sure my dogs aren't left in pain from tangles I can't deal with

Gingersay · 03/11/2022 23:55

I get my springer groomed every couple of months. He gets a wee trim around the chest and rear and she trims the feathery bits on his legs. He has the most beautiful ears though so she knows not to touch them. He always comes out with a strut knowing he looks fancy!!
