Three convictions using CCTV evidence

Three recent high profile trials (Arthur, Star, Sebastian) have used CCTV evidence from within the home. I've never heard of anyone having CCTV in their own home. How is it that three murder cases have CCTV evidence? It seems crazy that people would a) have CCTV in their home and b) behave so appallingly, knowing that there is CCTV.

Unhappily it is part of the enjoyment and sadism of watching their victims suffer - and they believe they deserve it.

People with CCTV in their homes are odd. They want to watch. Why?

What on earth have I just read? We have an indoor camera to watch our dogs. Therefore we are odd?

Boomboom22 · 03/11/2022 22:04

It is pretty odd though and does indicate control.

Jalepenojello · 03/11/2022 22:05

It’s quite common now. We have an indoor camera however it is only on and recording when the home is empty

Ludo19 · 03/11/2022 22:05

In Sebastians case it was so they could monitor his behaviour when they weren't home. Then punish him, if say he went to the fridge.

It's really harrowing to document abuse and even record it on your phone which also seems to be popular. Sadistic.

bigbluebus · 03/11/2022 22:06

I don't think it's unusual for people to have indoor cameras if they have pets. I've got friends who have got them.

GoodnightGentleBoris · 03/11/2022 22:06

It’s very odd that they installed it to watch the effect of their actions

However given they’ve been key in helping get a conviction then how many cases are going under the radar that don’t have evidence?

AnotherDelphinium · 03/11/2022 22:07

I have indoor cameras to watch my cats, and they’re helpful for working out where I left my keys but I can’t help but wonder how many of these cases occur where there isn’t any cctv and so they don’t have enough evidence and don’t get a conviction.

LexMitior · 03/11/2022 22:07

I am not kidding on the odd CCTV thing. Many abuse cases use "pet cams". For abusive families this is a nice cover for controlling conduct, sorry to say.

OldTinHat · 03/11/2022 22:08

I live alone, no pets and have cameras all over the house. Internal ones don't record but they give me peace of mind.

DazzleRazzles · 03/11/2022 22:08

Because it’s a lot more common these days to have cameras at home.

We have cameras all over the inside and outside of the house.

Nutmeg321 · 03/11/2022 22:11

I agree, very odd to have cameras in the home. Especially since they must have known what they were doing was against the law, it’s almost like they wanted to get caught or something.

RandomMess · 03/11/2022 22:12

My friends (ex) partner had cameras in their home for "security" meant he could view any visitors whilst he was off-shore. So yeah controlling using the excuse of "security".

Lougle · 03/11/2022 22:18

Maybe it's more common than I thought, then. How awful for the jury to have to watch it all. Just harrowing.

There have been convictions using Alexa too . Devices are always recording.

We had a training day (police) that showed a domestic abuser systematically beating his partner on cctv . What was chilling was he was totally calm - it wasn't done in a rage . He kept going back to beat her . Cctv is very very useful in these cases.

Pitterpatterofrain · 03/11/2022 22:23

CCTV in the home is not odd at all it's good security. A neighbor of mine had their house broken into buy a gang of youths whilst they were out. They all had their hoods up out side whilst breaking in and the outdoor CCTV did not pick up their faces.

But unfortunately for them he had set up a small indoor cameras pointing down the stairs inside the house. The police identified all of them from their faces as they went up the stairs.
