To Think It’s Time for Mum to Move On?

Live-in DM is having a massive, negative impact on my mental health.

Won’t go into all the details as I would fill the thread myself, but suffice to say she has a severe lack of boundaries, no social subtlety and does not compromise on anything around the house, even when we (apparently) have a reasonable discussion about it and come to a (supposedly) mutual decision.

I love her, but I cannot live with her any longer.

I own the house - she has no assets as such, though has a small income from my dad’s old pension, state pension and DLA (lower awards)

I’m at a loss as to what to do - anyone have any advice about our options in terms of housing, etc?

Or AIBU and should just get on with it??

Tell your mother that she needs to find alternate living arrangements and stick to your guns.

A bit more background would be useful. Why is she living with you? How long has it been going on?

Untitledsquatboulder · 03/11/2022 13:51

Oh and where was she living before? And how old is she?

WeeOrcadian · 03/11/2022 13:51

Tell her she needs to find somewhere to live, with a time line. Give her numbers of the local council / HA. Be firm.

I’m going to start by asking a question SS would ask. Did your Mum gift you any money e.g. to help pay for the house? If so, you will need to give it back.

The options are to look at renting a retirement property, assisted living accommodation or a residential home.

You may find it useful to contact Age concern. Look at what benefits she can get etc.

How old is she, who else lives in the house and how big is it?

maddy68 · 03/11/2022 14:55

Just tell her it's time she started her new life. Find her flats to look at

Great idea, with you in charge, we'll end homelessness!

Did you miss the bit where she has very little income?

saraclara · 03/11/2022 15:01

How old is she? How old are you? Where was she living before she moved in with you?

Can she get an old person’s bungalow through the local housing association, they are usually linked up with a warden in case of emergency
