Bit perplexed by butterfly and similar

I completely understand the importance of swim lessons to the point of being a strong enough swimmer to be safe in the water. I can even understand having decent enough technique to be able to effectively swim a long distance because again. That could become a safety issue.

why though do children need a perfect butterfly stroke? Butterfly is an impractical, artificial stroke that no one would ever choose in any real life situation.

Completely agree, I stopped my daughter's swimming lessons once they started doing butterfly (she can do the other strokes no problem) and practising turn roll things like they do in races

No real opinion on it tbh, but I did see a girl use perfect flawless butterfly to get out of a rip at the beach. Even the lifeguards were impressed.

I think that's exactly why Butterfly is useful - getting through waves and currents.

There is a thing online that it was only created to ensure that breaststroke was standardised and 'fair' in competition, which could be true, and the physical benefits are fairly obvious for strength/core stability and whatnot - but the actual real world applications are in getting out of dangerous situations.

I expect it’s useful if you can do it.

If you feel your kids are proficient enough at the other strokes and you don’t want them to learn butterfly then just stop the lessons.

There are hardly any kids with the combined strength and technique to pass the ASA levels for butterfly unless they're in competitive squads. It can be useful yes but only if you do it well and it holds kids back. Mine were stuck in l7 I think it was and then covid hit so no lessons.

If the kids aren't moving uo because of butterfly it's souls destroying. Mine do rookie lifeguard now. No need for butterfly.

The ASA made a mistake when they rearranged the levels imo.
