To be perplexed by some of the photos on Vinted?

Admittedly I'm Very Old. I therefore expect a certain amount of modern ideas to pass me by, but even so.

My new obsession hobby is Vinted. I have nothing to sell because I am old and unfashionable, and I wear my clothes until they wear out. I have however spent some time recently replenishing my wardrobe from its hallowed portals.

I now find myself looking for some new jeans (my current ones having all mysteriously shrunk) so naturally toddled off for a browse, thrilled with the idea that I might pick up a couple pairs for a bargain price. I have however found myself somewhat intimidated by the photos of them being worn, as the wearers are invariably toned and pretty. That aside, the shenanigans they've got up to in order to sell their loot is amazing. One photo shows a girl in the woods with her jeans half unbuttoned and in her bra. Another is a girl thrown backwards over the kitchen sink. Most of them have the jeans at half mast (as my grandmother would have said) All sultry eyes and pouting lips.

Ive thoroughly enjoyed the experience and admire their dedication to get a sale, but I simply cannot buy a pair of jeans from a woman cavorting in the woods in her underwear (though admittedly I may not actually be the target demographic) I fear I may have to slink back to eBay where jeans are photographed much more mundanely on mannequins, coat hangers, or even at a push on beds <sad face>

I saw this but on men when trying to buy some Levi’s for DH. Lots of men with unbuttoned jeans lifting their T-shirt up at one side to reveal their abs, looking smoulderingly into the camera. Hilarious!

I see more of the blurry photos, clothes listed as new without tags with obvious stains and holes and photos of clothes were they are still in the packet/folder so can’t actually see them.

That is odd! (Those jeans don’t fit her either…)
I just photo things on a hanger on the back of a door..

Probably why she's selling ...

InPraiseOfBacchus · 03/11/2022 13:27

I don't see a great deal of these (they're mostly a feature of depop...)

What I do see on Vinted are dozens of people's gross feet while they're photographing things on the floor or on tables. Just crop the photo, please!!!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 03/11/2022 13:41

I often see almost readers wives type posed pictures generally selling labels like Oh Polly, Boo Hoo and the like.

Nearly always describing an item as "worn once", yes but you've worn it on a night out and possibly been a bit sweaty in it!!

I really don't think they're actually aimed at males. I would consider myself quite fashionable and buy and sell a lot on Vinted. I follow a lot of fashion and life style influencers and I know some I follow post photos of themselves wearing the pieces that they have used on social media. I have also come across slightly more tacky / risqué snaps similar to what you're describing (not in the woods though), and would assume that as they're posted by younger sellers in their early 20's who are much more forward and provocative with their selfies and poses that they're just the way they take pics for their social media. I've noticed that younger people in general have a very different way of posing for photos and trying to make themselves look / feel better in pictures and just end up looking a tad ridiculous to me but I think it's more normalised amongst their social / friend groups

Agree with much of this.

I think it's a shame young people now feel pressured to put so much thought and prep into their pictures. They often look very rehearsed or posed like a thousand others. No spontaneity. I feel for them

Definitely Vinted stickofveg 😉

majorcamaiden you've put it perfectly. I've managed to screenshot and edit the woodland photo which first caught my attention. I just couldn't see myself wearing a pair of jeans that had started life so exuberantly 😆

That is indeed an unusual way to photograph Grin

I noticed this on vinted too...proper looking photo shoots! The sexiness I think is just how young women are programmed to present themselves, but I guess too it's about getting 'followers' who might buy more of your old stuff if they like the lewk and are the same size? It's not just about putting it on a hanger or laying it flat, it's about presenting the item as part of some sort of curated life, which the buyer could have a part of too if they purchase it?

Most amusing to this old bird.

As an old dinosaur who had her younger days in the 90s this explanation does make sense.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 03/11/2022 13:48

I guess if these kind of photos are also accompanied by close ups of labels, details, fastenings etc they are still helpful.

Its when it's just the hot picture ... I mean make some effort if you want someone to buy it!

mn29 · 03/11/2022 13:53

I thought this post was going to be about how weird/awful some sellers' photos are. Eg sandals photographed on gross feet with bunions and cracked heels/ piles of crap in the background/ only showing eg the waistband of jeans/ top of a dress in photos so you have no idea what the whole item actually looks like. Me and my friends always send each other screenshots of ones we find amusing.

Yes! All the time - why can they not see it and realise it's offputting?

MistyRock · 03/11/2022 15:34

I briefly had a look on Vinted and it struck me as a place to sell the clothes you don't actually give a crap about. Nothing ironed, it all looked like it was pulled out of the dirty washing basket. It wasn't for me. EBay 100%.

RambamThankyouMam · 03/11/2022 15:46

It's aimed at AGPs. You know, the ones we're supposed to be welcoming into our changing rooms and other spaces.

jimmyhill · 03/11/2022 15:59

Perhaps it's not the clothes that are for sale on those listings...?

JudgeRindersMinder · 03/11/2022 20:32

Yarrawonga · 03/11/2022 11:54

I buy and sell a fair bit on Vinted and photos of the owner wearing the item puts me right off!

I’m the complete opposite. I’ve had more failures buying stuff shown hanging on the back of a door.

If you are buying secondhand, it’s a bit silly to pretend nobody else has worn it before.

@Yarrawonga I never said I was rational!😂

jiggleypuff · 03/11/2022 20:42

I see this a lot too, OP. I think a lot of them are just the selfie generation so taking pics of themselves comes naturally.

Oh for crying out loud, this is just how youths and young adults behave these days. It's got sweet FA to do with da tranz.

Genuinely never seen anything like you are describing.

I know. Every Vinted picture I see is a blurry crumpled mess of fabric on the floor. The picture is frequently upside down as well.

majorcamaiden · 03/11/2022 10:08

First search of 'mini dress' brings up this. But you can tell from her number of sales and the rest of her clothing and images that this is just the way she dresses and poses. Who knows why this photo was taken and who it was meant for. But she obviously thinks she looks good so she's included it in the listing. Not for male attention, but because it will also get the attention of younger girls who thinks she looks good and hope the dress will also look as good on them. Not my taste, but not aimed at men either (at least when shared on Vinted, the original recipient on the other hand....?)

Don't think the dress is for sale.

One of Vinted’s top tips is to upload pictures of you wearing the item you’re selling so it’s clearer for people to see

Bytrgrewd · 03/11/2022 22:27

Yes! I was looking for tops and there was one seller whose photos were very nippley 😆

TheMildManneredMilitant · 03/11/2022 22:29

I accidentally (honest!) clicked on an Anne Summers bra once. Now my front page feed prioritises showing me Anne Summers stuff. I really don't want to be buying second hand AS!

Is this really a young girl @Champagneforeveryone ? Even though the face is blocked out, it just doesn't look (to me) like a 'young girl's' figure.

You’re extremely bad vibes to be posting a screenshot of someone’s information just so you can call them protective. You didn’t even think to scribble out the name or anything? My God
