Why am I always thirsty?

Posting here seeing as my gp won’t see me just to see if anyone else had any ideas? I’ve had the blood test for diabetes and that’s was normal.

I am always thirsty. I’ve been like this for years. I probably drink about 8-10litres of water a day. I have to carry a drink around with me at all times and within about 10 minutes my mouth is dry and I’m dying for a drink. My diet isn’t overly salty.

Any idea what this could be?

Is it that you’re thirsty or is it that your mouth is dry? They sound like different things.

Yarboosucks · 02/11/2022 19:55

Are you or could you he menopausal?

Kittykat93 · 02/11/2022 19:55

I have this too. No idea why, I did buy a mouthwash for dry mouth but it actually made it worse tbh. I do take some medication which is part of it definitely.

Diabetes insipidus? (It's completely unrelated to blood sugar and diabetes mellitus)

www.nhs.uk/conditions/diabetes-insipidus/

Were your bloods tested for electrolytes? That's a lot of water you're drinking so important to make sure your salt levels are within a normal range.

Do you wake up in the night to drink water, or just thirsty in the day?

I would insist on another GP appt if they haven't addressed this Flowers

Notcontent · 02/11/2022 19:57

I have had this recently. I am perimenopausal so maybe that’s it.

I know someone who had this for months, turned out to be anemia.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 02/11/2022 19:59

Dty mouth is a symptom of an auto immune condition called Sjogren's Syndrome

VestaTilley · 02/11/2022 20:00

I’ve been exactly the same since having a lot of gas and air when in labour. That may be totally unrelated, but I drink buckets of water and constantly feel like my tongue has been stripped with sandpaper.

DrCoconut · 02/11/2022 20:01

Since my B6 has been very high I have been thirsty. Not to the extent you describe but I still drink a lot more than I did. I think my system is trying to flush it out (not realising that it can't 😩)

runjy · 02/11/2022 20:01

8-10 litres? isn't that dangerous?

AlwaysGinPlease · 02/11/2022 20:04

@foliageeverywhere you beat me to it. I suspect this. My sisters friend has it. Please see your doctor, insist!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/11/2022 20:07

Do you take antihistamine for anything? I am prescribed one that has this side effect

LurkinBookseller · 02/11/2022 20:10

This can be a side effect of some medications.

SirMoose · 02/11/2022 20:12

I’m not taking any medication and not menopausal

Are you really thirsty or is it just habit?

17CherryTreeLane · 02/11/2022 20:13

It could be anemia as a previous poster suggested, or (and this is a bit random), Lyme disease. Any Ticks previously?

8-10 litres? isn't that dangerous?

Very. I was admitted to hospital with hyponatremia after a couple of months of drinking 4-5 litres per day, and I was incredibly ill.

Luluthecat · 02/11/2022 20:16

Sjogrens - do you have joint pain/dry eyes/ mouth ulcers?

buy some Xylimelts on Amazon they will help a lot can be used both night and day. Chewing gum is a good way of avoiding drinking too much alcohol

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 02/11/2022 20:17

Do you have dry eyes?

SirMoose · 02/11/2022 20:19

No joint pain or mouth ulcers. I have symptoms of polycyclic ovaries too but have been tested several times and tests have been clear.
