Anyone else want to scream 😱 about prices

Anyone else feel like screaming 😱. The smart meter is now the enemy. I'm constantly topping up the meter. Yes it's prepayment they won't change it I've tried and tried. The budget just keeps getting tighter. It's hard to find cheap food no offers things constantly out of stock. You need a bank loan for just to buy toliet roll 🙄 I don't have the heating on constantly I try to just heat one room with a heater. Radiators are barely on an hour here and there to keep away damp. Dryer needs to be used in in emergency since the house is colder so clothes aren't drying properly. I use an airer and it's constantly raining and windy to use the washing line. Food budget is through the roof food is smaller and more expensive and always out of stock honestly what a joke.

Big fan of those we have one and have squeaky clean bums with just a pinch of paper to dry,

petmad · 09/11/2022 11:15

some people have said spread youre shopping around a few supermarkets to save money it wont really save much due to petrol costs unless their all within walking distance. Aldi and iceland for me

Where is now best for toilet paper? I am still buying at ALDI but no idea if anywhere else is cheaper.

For me, Lidl is best. I think it's same price as Aldi and probably same quality? Asda's own is useless. Thin as cotton candy.

antelopevalley · 09/11/2022 12:40

LIDL is more expensive for toilet paper.

LIDL is more expensive for toilet paper.

How much is Aldi? Lidl's is 7 quid.

antelopevalley · 09/11/2022 13:18

£6.49

Thelnebriati · 09/11/2022 13:20

Asda toilet paper is about £8 for 24 rolls and the quality is better than Lidl - not the Smart Price one.

jennakong · 09/11/2022 14:38

I live in Northern Ireland, apart from the really good Tesco 'Aria' brand I find the supermarket toilet roll very expensive. I find buying it from pharmacy chains like Medicare, Clear and Gordons cheaper, they usually have at least one brand on offer - but I don't know whether it's the same in the rest of the UK.

vera99 · 09/11/2022 19:09

This is good enough and a good price.

Vera99 .. i was just about to order the loo roll you linked to .. but saw it was scented ? Does it cause any irritation?

GUARDIAN1 · 09/11/2022 22:13

I once ordered some loo roll on Groupon, not realising it was scented. It irritated the hell out of me. Amazon's own Presto brand is unscented, good quality and good value

Decafflatteplease · 12/11/2022 21:59

Re toilet roll we like the Lidl purple one but it's been out of stock in our local one for a while now. We are liking the Asda one at the moment but it's not actually Asda brand I think it's a budget range, meadow or something will check tomorrow but it's around £10 but I save my points on the app to get money off so fairly comparable price wise to Lidl

Not for us it smells quite nice and is of good quality can recommend it for sure.

BosaNova · 12/11/2022 23:06

Just don't ever get strawberry one. It's not a nice smell combo with the intended purpose in a bathroom😂

Decafflatteplease · 13/11/2022 08:17

Just checked and it's Asda "feather soft" not meadow 😂

Whitney168 · 13/11/2022 10:02

Toilet paper seems to be one of the worst culprits for shrinkflation. I swapped to WGAC a couple of years back, as the supermarket prices were going up and up while the inner tube got wider and the winding got looser. WGAC may seem more expensive, but I find it far better value.

Another vote for M&S being very competitive at the moment too - as well as things others have mentioned, I noticed this week that their red lentils are cheaper even than East End. Agree with others that although their fruit and veg may be marginally more expensive, the quality and 'shelf life' is hugely better.

For those with fussy small dogs, their 150g dog food trays are a great price too and my dog (touch wood) prefers them. As with all these well priced things though, I buy in bulk when I see them as availability can be a bit patchy.

AutumnPlaylist · 13/11/2022 14:24

Toilet paper is annoyingly expensive, I agree.

hellycat · 13/11/2022 15:56

Yes, I was surprised this week when I got green lentils from M&S for only 80p, their bananas were also very cheap, also their loaves of white bread which people in our house prefer for toast. Also got big bottle of washing up liquid for about 60p. Grocery basics are good there, though their chilled/deli stuff is still ridiculously expensive.

maddiemookins16mum · 13/11/2022 17:39

I moved from Asda to Aldi in the spring and my shopping bill decreased by approx £50 a month. However everything I now buy in Aldi has increased in price by 10-25p per item since September. For instance, the frozen chicken, ham hock and leek pies now £2.19 - were £1.99. Norpak, was £1.99, now £2.19. The sliced cheddar slices, were 99p, now £1.29. Even the little sachets of dried casserole mixes - were 20p, now 25p! All these increases add up, we’re talking 10-20% increases!

gymgymgim · 13/11/2022 17:53

Waitrose Essentials and some M&S stuff is now cheaper than the other supermarkets and much better quality.

Who says illegal migrants dont get any benefits???... the NHS is a benefit we've paid for and they haven't.
I take it if they were injured or had a health emergency, they wouldn't be left lying in the street?
Channel migrants are given a warm room, meals, healthcare (they can see a GP whereas we can't )....and spending money. Clearly a lot of benefits costing us money that could be spent on our own.The shouldn't be here and aren't invited.

I wonder if we would be treated so kindly if we invaded their countries. No! Women would have to shroud up and shut up!
Makes me sick of Southern lefty, elitists and traitor lawyers facilitating these uninvited incomers.
Look after your own first like the ex servicemen sleeping rough. This year there won't be ANY hotel rooms available to them

I really hope you’re pretty because …..

My mate who is a regular immigrant and WORKS FOR THE NHS has to pay to use it. Maybe for the smooth-brained it must be pointed out that if you’re an asylum-seeker and arrive with a Nokia 3210 and one shoe you don’t have thousands to pay for anything? Also refugees ARE invited to come if they wish … by international law that humanity agreed on after WW2 although by your attitude towards those with a darker skin, you don’t like to think of the pretty red flowers that everyone was wearing because your side lost.

Completely irrelevant to the thread.

askmenow · 14/11/2022 00:13

Ah... but the majority of those men (and they are mostly young men) most recently crossing the channel on rubber dingys are not strictly refugees are they?

They are not coming from a war torn country but are illegal economic migrants abandoning their own safe country.
They have not been invited into the UK. They came through a safe EU country, France and if they wanted a better life, that is where they should have stayed.
We should take care of our own residents not pay out for illegals.

What does any of that have to do with the price of anything in the shops?

The boat men are stealing from the mouths of the most deprived people in the world, because a large chunk of their budget comes from money that would have been sent abroad as Foreign Aid.

Your regular immigrant friend is not stealing from starving children by sucking up the Foreign Aid budget & is a completely different story to some Albanian man who doesn't want to live where he was born.

Neither legal or illegal immigrants are the reason the price of butter has gone up.

Made me think of something my friend used to say, 'what's that got to do with the price of fish?' LOL.
Fair points, I agree with @Brokendaughter

Does anyone know why paper products, eg loo roll, kitchen towel etc have taken such a hit with prices? Can't see that covid affects them, after the rush, no ukraine connection that I know, guess fuel costs maybe ?
